5 Secrets To a Perfect Lawn
1. Mow with sharp blades:
If your include a green lawn, the key is frequent cutting, which forces it to grow thick and keep out weeds. Keep sharp so the grass isn't beat up and made vulnerable to disease.
2. Don't go too short:
Golf courses mow low for a . "The lower you mow, the more herbicides and water you need, and then it becomes an intensive system," says Pete , professor of turf grass science at Penn State University.
3. Don't mow a wet lawn:

Tips for Watering and Feeding Your Lawn
1. Maintain during a drought.
During periods of drought grass stops growing, the blades turn yellow and then brown before dying back, exposing patches of soil. However, due to environmental concerns, lawns really only need water in extremely dry conditions. Lawns can recover quickly after drought and often make a full and rapid recovery when rain returns. If lawns must be watered, it should be done in the morning or evening to reduce evaporation loss.
2. Consider your soil.
If you want very lush green grass, your soil type will determine how often to water. Water well once a week for clay and loamy soils and twice a week for sandy soils; water needs to pe*****te down to the root systems — about 4 inches (10 cm) down. A small inspection hole can be dug to check the moistness of the soil. Avoid spraying paths, patios, and hard surfaces to avoid water wastage.

How to Landscape With Ornamental Grasses

Materials Needed:
2 Stipa calamagrostis plants
1 Miscanthus sinensis plants
1 Miscanthus sinensis plants
2 Pennisetum alopecuroides plants
3 Hakonechloa macra plants
1 Elymus magellanicus plants
planting soil
gardening rake
gravel
gardening hose
pruning shears

Planting and Aftercare

Turn over the soil, and rake it level. Lay down landscape fabric to prevent weeds from germinating, and cut slits where the plants are to be slotted. The Stipa calamagrostis and the Miscanthus sinensis 'Zebrinus' are the tallest plants, so position these toward the back, 20 inches (50 cm) apart. Place the others in the foreground, about 8 inches (2 0cm) apart. Cover any visible landscape fabric with gravel. Water regularly in the first year until the grasses are established. They are deciduous, but can be left over winter to provide structure and wildlife interest and should then be cut back in February. This design is relatively low maintenance since grasses require no deadheading, pruning, or staking, while the landscape fabric will help to smother weeds.

3 lawn and landscaping tips for spring:
1. Clean up - The first thing you must do to prepare for any spring landscaping project is to clean up the lawn, beds and garden. Pick up all branches that may have fallen during the winter, leaves and debris that may be on the lawn, in the garden or beds, and clean up the area you are preparing to work with.

2. Plant and feed - If you plan on planting new grass seed or installing sod, make sure you do not apply any pre-emergent with the early spring lawn treatment. Just apply a balanced organic based fertilizer in these areas.

If you plan on waiting until the fall to do your annual grass planting or sod installation, then I advise you to apply a crabgrass barrier pre-emergent plus fertilizer to the lawn. A natural pre-emergent plus fertilizer is corn gluten meal.

For all plants and garden vegetables, make sure the soil is in the proper condition for planting. I would advise a soil test before planting anything to make sure you know what nutrients the soil is deficient in.

Add organic matter or compost to the soil at the time of planting to improve the soil structure and to promote deeper roots. This will mean less stress from insects, disease and heat. It will also result in a lower water bill, as you’ll need to water these areas less.

3. Sharpen your mower blades - If you winterized your lawn mower and didn’t sharpen the mower blades, sharpen them now. There are plenty of professionals that can do this for you for a fee of around $20 to $30. If you plan on doing this yourself then make sure to remove the spark plug before attempting to take the blades off.

Sharpening your mower blades will help you cut the grass instead of tearing it. Tearing the grass blades can cause an unsightly tan or brown color to a freshly cut lawn. It also can promote fungus development.

Lawn Mowing Tips and Advices:

Lawn mowing is healthy for your lawn. You’re trimming away the oldest part of the plant because grass grows from the bottom up. A higher cut – generally trimming the top third of the plant – will shade the roots and encourage a deeper root system.

A deep root system can reach water further down in the soil, providing reserve power to survive dry spells.

Different types of grass require different cutting heights; in general, cool-season grasses should be cut at three and a half inches, while warm-season grasses are cut at two inches.
