Hey Spokane and North Idaho — Roof Talk time. 🏠

Look close at this shot. See that smoother, lighter patch where the granules should be? That's not dirt or shadow — that's the fiberglass mat starting to show through.

Every shingle has three layers: a fiberglass base, an asphalt coating, and a layer of granules on top that does most of the work — blocking UV rays, shedding water, and protecting the asphalt underneath. Granules don't last forever. On most roofs, they start visibly thinning around the 15-20 year mark, and sun exposure, poor attic ventilation, hail, or foot traffic can push that timeline up even earlier.

Once you can see fiberglass, the granule layer in that spot is gone — which means the asphalt underneath is taking direct UV hits and losing its flexibility. Hey Spokane Valley! 🏠 New Roof Talk is live — join us for a full walkthrough of a job we just wrapped up, top to bottom.

Here's what went into this one:

We tore off the old single-layer roof down to the bare deck, and found it in great shape — no sheet replacements needed. From there, we installed Malarkey high-temp ice & water shield to code, running two feet past the warm wall on every eave and valley, and wrapped the dormer completely on both sides up to the chimney. The rest of the deck got Malarkey's permeable synthetic underlayment.

The homeowner chose an exposed W-metal valley over a closed-cut look, and we finished it off with Malarkey Legacy shingles in Heather.

For airflow, we added 10 Lomanco 750 can vents to keep the attic breathing right. All 7 pipe flashings were swapped for Lifetime Ultimate pipe flashings, we installed a retrofit boot on the power mast, and had a custom furnace vent flashing fabricated by our friends at Carlson Sheet Metals here in Spokane.

We kept the existing chimney counter flashing but installed all-new under-flashing beneath it, and topped it off with permanent roof anchors on every ridge — so future work up there can be done safely.

😱 Roofing Horror Stories: A Flashing Job That Was Doomed From the Start

This metal roof install went wrong right at the flashings. They were cut and set incorrectly, so instead of shedding water off the roof, they funneled it straight into the gaps underneath. First real rain that came through? Every single flashing leaked.

New Standing Seam Metal Roof in Dark Bronze

This week our crew wrapped up a full roof replacement on a striking A-frame log cabin along East Blanchard Road in Newport, WA — just minutes from the Idaho line. Steep pitch (5/12, up to 20/12 at the gables), heavy Inland Northwest snow loads, and a rustic timber-frame look to protect. No small job. 🏔️

Every time a big storm rolls through North Idaho, the same thing happens.

Skylights are one of the most common leak points we find during inspections in North Idaho.

Not because of the skylight itself.

Because of how the flashing around it was installed.

A skylight creates an interruption in the roof plane.

Water has to be directed around it precisely on all four sides.

That requires correctly installed step flashing on the sides, a properly formed saddle at the top, and a precisely sized apron at the bottom.

If any of those details are wrong, water finds the gap.

Not immediately.

Over months and seasons as the assembly expands and contracts with temperature changes.

Most homeowners never think about any of this.

They see a skylight and assume it either leaks or it does not.

A skylight that is not currently leaking can be one rain event away from starting to.

And when it does, the water does not always show up directly below the skylight.
It travels inside the wall cavity first.

By the time it appears on your ceiling, it has already been somewhere else for a while.

This is why the details get measured.
