A client of ours brought up an interesting point yesterday speaking on the phone. I suppose it “ties in” with the whole debate of outsourcing your estimating as opposed to handling it in house.

Our client rambled about how he would never ever again hire an in house estimator and how we have saved him an enormous amount of money while winning him hundreds of thousands of dollars in profitable work.

To the point he continued to say how it just made sense as all but the largest companies outsource their accounting (CPA) , and most of the time their legal issues to a lawyer. Not many firms have a CPA or an attorney on payroll. This was his take on it. A lightbulb went off in my head. We trust something so crucial as taxes and law to an outside firm, because they have the training resources and expertise to handle this work. The same holds true (not in every case) to outsourcing your estimating to a professional. if that is all they do all day , every day. He put our services into a whole new perspective. Yet I read on the forums about some who have had horrible experiences and say they would never trust anyone except within their firm to handle their estimating. So I am wondering those who feel that way,if they do their own taxes and represent themselves legally? Or do they outsource that work?

Finally, I read constantly about how employers can’t find estimators yet , if I, search for 10 jobs , 9 of them require in person for the position? Wondering why in this day and age , employer are so stringent about requiring their estimators to appear physically in the office? Most estimators want to work remote and can. I feel like this is restricting the ability for companies to find anyone. Any thoughts on both matters? Thanks
