Madoo. Last stop on the New York Botanical Garden’s Landscape Students and Alumni Long Island tour was Madoo in Sagaponack. Dima made the good suggestion to take the tiny ferries to get there via Shelter Island, which made the commute part of the fun.

not only gave us a private insider’s tour, he fed us a fantastic country lunch that was so hyper-locally sourced, we later walked by the potager that grew the beans 😊

I loved the bold colors and strong designs of this landscape. I snuck ahead of the group to experience much of it alone, my favorite way to get a first impression.

Notice the nod to ‘s great ecological work with the image of the nest. Nigel is how I came to know Alejandro, and we agreed that he was a most special combination of charming unassuming personality and a powerhouse of transformative ideas. He is sorely missed.

Landcraft, part 2. Next stop on the New York Botanical Garden’s Landscape Students and Alumni Long Island tour was Landcraft Garden Foundation in Mattituck. More David Harber sculptures plus so many excellent construction details, eye-popping container plantings, and whimsy. A special thanks to for supplying us all with water bottles and watermelon, exactly what was needed to help us get ready for a drive to the next location. He and Dima coordinated these visits and they did a masterful job- it all ran like clockwork.

Landcraft, part 1. Next stop on the New York Botanical Garden’s Landscape Students and Alumni Long Island tour was Landcraft Garden Foundation in Mattituck, where Kerry Ann gave us a great tour. She knew every plant name and cultivar we asked about, and gave some excellent design information and back stories. It was insanely hot but enchanting anyhow.

An added bonus were the wonderfully sited sculptures by David Haber.

First stop of our New York Botanical Garden’s Landscape Students and Alumni Long Island visits was to the fantastic wholesale grower Glover Perennials in Cutchogue, NY on the North Fork

Jim Glover gave a cheerful and informative talk, covering plant favorites, cultural requirements, new introductions, and underused workhorses. I spent most of my time holding up plants to photograph them with their labels so I’d remember what to add to my plant palette.

I managed to stuff my car with purchases from here on my way to Dima’s the day before, and my Airbnb hosts graciously allowed me to unload and water them to wait out the day in the shade. I can’t believe how big and beautiful they were, great quality.

Some members of New York Botanical Garden’s Landscape Students and Alumni group had a wonderful two days exploring the far end of Long Island this week. We started off in member Dima’s home gravel garden, astonishingly beautiful after only two years. I got there a little too late to fully partake in the cocktails, charcuterie, and conversation, but we went out for dinner and got some time together before the next day’s packed agenda.
