Common Electrical Problems
Here are a few issues that can arise in your commercial or residential building that could result in desperate need of electrical repairs if left unattended.
* Burnt Out Light BulbsAll light bulbs have a lifespan, but if they are burning out too quickly, there may be an issue with a loose connection in the socket or the circuit. If you find that you have to frequently change light bulbs, it is best to get hold of an electrician who can do an inspection and find the loose connection.
*
* Lights That FlickerLights flicker for a number of reasons. One of the most common reasons for lights to flicker is due to a weak connection in the socket or a faulty bulb. Often replacing the bulb will fix the problem, but if the flickering lights persist, it is best to hire a professional from Sliger Electric Service for electrical repairs.
*
* Dead OutletsA dead electrical outlet can result from a number of things. The circuit may have tripped, or blown a fuse. If a plug doesn’t fit into the outlet, then the outlet may be the reason for the circuit failing, for example the receptacle may have worn out. The reason for the dead outlet should be professionally assessed to determine the problem and fix it accordingly.
*
* Switches and Fixtures That Stay WarmThis is a problem that is often overlooked. It is actually a huge safety concern and could lead to an electrical fire. The reason could be that the switch is overloaded, the switch is failing, or there is faulty wiring. Bearing in mind that dimmer switches can be warm at times, they should never be too hot. Make sure to keep an eye on switches and fixtures that appear to be abnormally warm, and call your trusted local electrician Sliger Electric Service for a thorough inspection and diagnosis.
*
* Breakers That Frequently TripWhen a circuit draws too much power at a given time, it can cause the breaker to trip. The purpose of a breaker is to protect an electrical circuit from damage due to excessive current. If the breaker keeps tripping, there may be a dangerous problem on hand. If the breaker is older, and has not had regular maintenance, your building could be at electrical risk.
Maintenance is Key
These are just a few common problems that can result in larger, more dangerous and costly problems if left unattended. In order to prevent these issues from prevailing, and to pick up on potential problems before they create larger issues, your building should undergo regular inspections and maintenance checks.
Through regular electrical maintenance, we at Sliger Electric Service are able to detect any issues that may not appear obvious at first. Maintenance ensures the safety of your home or company building by detecting loose parts, faulty connections, exposure to moisture and other potential electrical hazards.
If you are in charge of a commercial property, you will understand that your responsibility extends further than the actual building, and affects the profits of the company and livelihood of your employees. If you are looking out for the safety of your residential property, you will understand that you are also ensuring the protection of your family and belongings.
Always remember that trying to fix an electrical problem by yourself may cost you more money in the long run, and it may be a dangerous task, risking injury to yourself and damage to your belongings. Regular maintenance that takes care of the small problems can go a long way in preventing larger problems.

Many electrical fire dangers are hidden within the walls of your house. However, if you know how to spot the warning signs, you can make proactive — and less expensive — repairs that will also help protect your home in the long run. Here is a few ways to spot common issues and what to do about them
1. Unfamiliar or funny odors
A new appliance might produce an unfamiliar odor upon first being installed. This could be due to the appliance's paint, finish or some other superficial issue. But should you detect an odd smell coming from an electrical outlet, unplug anything connected to it, and don’t use it again until you have called Sliger Electric Service and has checked it. Additionally, if your breaker panel or fuse box is emitting an odd odor, call us immediately!!!
2. Arc faults
Arc faults occur when an electrical circuit veers off its intended path, often through a breach in the wiring. They are a frequent cause of electrical fires. However, arc faults are preventable through the installation of a device called an arc-fault circuit interpreter A homeowner could possibly install AFCIs but I suggest you give us a call. While they can be a bit pricey, the outlay is probably worth it, especially in older homes where the electrical wiring may have degraded.
3. Counterfeit electrical products
If you’ve ever gone to a flea market and seen vendors selling things like extension cords, power strips and night lights at ridiculously low prices, beware. There's a strong possibility that they are counterfeit or not up to government standards and incredibly dangerous. Purchase your electrical products from reputable, established dealers, and always check to make sure the product bears a seal from the Underwriters Laboratory (UL).
4. Warm or sparking outlets and switches
If your light switches are warm to the touch or an outlet is sparking, call the electrician Knoxville homeowners trust most immediately to see if your wiring needs repairs or the fixture should be replaced.
5. Buzzing sounds
Your outlets and switches should operate silently. If you hear any buzzing, cracking or sizzling sounds when you flip a switch or plug into an outlet, turn off the power to that fixture immediately and consult with Sliger Electric Service.

6. Flickering lights
Flickering lights usually indicate a power surge. These power surges don't necessarily have to come from a catastrophic event — more than likely, your appliances are making demands on the electrical system that it cannot handle. These surges can take a toll on both your appliances and your electrical fixtures. If flickering lights are a frequent occurrence, it may be time to consider upgrading the wiring in your home.
7. Broken light switches and loose outlets
If switches or outlets stop working or work only intermittently, it could be a sign of loose wiring — and another potential fire hazard. Loose outlets also create a potential for electrical shock. Even a partially exposed outlet could shock an unsuspecting individual who is plugging in or unplugging a cord.

8. Hot ceiling fixtures
Occasionally check the area around your ceiling fixtures for warmth that could indicate a lack of sufficient insulation . Also, exceeding recommended bulb wattages can cause overheating. Either issue poses a potential fire hazard. Consider switching to compact fluorescent light (CFL) or light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs as these don’t produce as much heat as incandescent bulbs.

9. Rodent droppings
Mice and rats love to chew on electrical wiring, and frayed or damaged wiring is a definite fire hazard. If you see any droppings or other signs of rodent activity in your attic, basement or around electrical fixtures, check all wiring in the area for signs of damage.
10. Circuit breaker problems
Circuit breakers are designed to trip when a circuit is overloaded. Tripping prevents overheating and eliminates fire hazards . Occasional tripping probably indicates a simple overload, but if it occurs repeatedly, you need to call Sliger Electric Service and have us evaluate and inspect your entire electrical system!

UPGRADE⚡️UPDATE⚡️ADD MORE VALUE TO YOUR HOME⚡️SAVE ON ENERGY BILL⚡️
1. Upgrade the Electrical Panel
It may not be an overtly cool home upgrade, but wow, does it impact your home’s safety in a big way! This is especially true if you live in an older home, or you’ve been noticing flickering lights or other electrical safety issues. Certainly, if you have any of these older or recalled electrical panel models, this isn’t just a good idea practically, but also for your home and family’s safety: split buss panels, Zinsco, I-T-E, GTE/Sylvania/Federal Pacific or Pushmatic electric panels should be replaced ASAP.
Even if you don’t have one of these models, if you have an older electrical panel, it may not be keeping up with your family’s modern electrical demands. If you’re not sure, call SLIGER ELECTRIC SERVICE for an electrical safety inspection.
2. Update Your Kitchen Lighting
Kitchen remodels are one of the most popular and productive things to spend your hard earned money on and see a return . If this is one of your dream remodels, but you can’t afford to do everything on your list at once, consider just updating the kitchen lighting. You’d be surprised how much of a positive change this and a few fixture updates will make towards a fresher-looking kitchen.
3. Other Kitchen Electrical Upgrades
In addition to lighting, there may be outlets, switches and other wiring issues in the kitchen that would make it work better. An example ? Old kitchen lights above sink? Can’t use the toaster or microwave at the same time? Fixing these kitchen electrical issues can keep your kitchen safer while also making your life more efficient and easier. Removing old appliances and replacing them with high-efficiency, energy saving appliances and their electrical wiring will also improve your life, improve your energy efficiency and boost your home’s resale value in this most-used room in the house.
4. Bathroom Lighting Updates
Another place in the home that homebuyers are always looking at is the bathrooms. Updating to recessed lighting or replacing old light fixtures with new ones can brighten and refresh bathrooms very quickly.
5. Exterior Lighting Updates
Again, we discuss the curb appeal issue. Updating your exterior light fixtures and security lighting can make your home more inviting all year round.
6. Replacement of Outlets and Switches
It is inexpensive, plus it greatly increases the safety of the electrical system while improving aesthetics.
7. Long-Needed Electrical Repairs
Whether you’re staying or selling your home, getting any long-needed electrical repairs or upgrades done now will save you money and probably improve your home’s safety in the long run. Homebuyers are particularly concerned about issues like this, even more so than kitchen remodels. If your home’s electric systems are sound, up-to-date and up to recent code, it shows that you’ve been a responsible homeowner.

Whether the circuit breaker tripped (again) or you’re concerned about flickering lights, you’re not alone. We get plenty of calls from homeowners/businesses during the summer for various electrical problems. Here we have listed the top 5 electrical issues we see during the summer. If you suspect an issue with your home’s electrical system, call SLIGER ELECTRIC SERVICE as soon as possible.

1.) Tripping the Circuit Breaker

Does the circuit breaker frequently trip? If so, your air conditioner may be to blame. While it may seem inconvenient to trip the circuit breaker, it serves the important function of preventing an electrical fire. When there is too much electricity for what the circuit can safely handle, it shuts off the power for your entire home.

It’s not uncommon for us to see more tripped circuit breakers in summer when air conditioners run the most. If your circuit breaker tripped, it’s time to call SLIGER ELECTRIC SERVICE today. We can help you discover why the circuit breaker tripped so you can avoid the safety issues of another power outage.

2.) Overusing Ceiling Fans

Stand underneath your ceiling fan to make sure the blades rotate counter clockwise. Otherwise, the air will stay near the ceiling. While ceiling fans don’t reduce the temperature inside your home, they are great for creating wind chill. Wind chill helps your home feel cooler than it really is by moving air across your skin. If no one is in a room, turn off the ceiling fan to conserve energy.

3.) Using Too Many Extension Cords

If you live in an older home, you may not have enough electrical outlets for all your appliances. To compensate, you may be using extension cords to place fans throughout your home. Extension cords are meant to be used as a temporary solution. If you find yourself using extension cords every day, call us as soon as possible.

Here at SLIGER ELECTRIC SERVICE we can install more tamper resistant outlets so you have electricity where it’s convenient for you. Like the name suggests, a tamper resistant outlet stops children from sticking sharp objects into the outlet and getting shocked. To use a tamper resistant outlet, there must be equal pressure on all holes.

4.) Flickering Lights

Do your lights flicker when the air conditioner kicks on? If so, you’ll want to call us as soon as possible. We’ll be able to inspect your AC to see how it interacts with your home’s electrical system. If neglected, your AC could trip the circuit breaker and drive up energy costs.

5.) Brown Outs

The hotter the weather, the more demand is put on your power company to supply electricity. However, too much demand can cause a brown out. You may be experiencing a brown out if the power goes out during summer. Signs that you’re on the verge of a brown out include flickering lights or groaning appliances.

There’s nothing you can do during a brown out except wait for the temperature to cool outside so demand for electricity also decreases. Your power company may recommend you hold off on using electricity until late evening or night so there’s less demand.

Brown outs are not caused by a single customer, but rather from all customers clamoring for high levels of electricity at once. People tend to use more electricity during the summer for air conditioning, fans, and other ways to stay cool.

Our team can help you discover the cause of flickering lights and tripped circuit breakers that are so common during the summer months. To request your quote for electrical repair, call SLIGER ELECTRIC SERVICE at (865) 338-6404.
