I recently met with a homeowner in South Mills about replacing their heat pump. They told me the system seemed to continuously run, especially during the hot summer months. Being proactive, they contacted three companies (I was the 3rd) for estimates. One of the three had done the maintenance on the residence for the past three years.

The customer told me that Company A gave a quote over the phone. Company B was on site for 10-15 minutes, took a few pictures and left.

I found a couple issues during my evaluation. First, the thermostat was in the wrong location. Generally the thermostat should be in close proximity to the return grille. Second, their duct work had broken. Like water, air takes the path of least resistance. In this case that path was into the attic.

Just a little extra time during the evaluation saved this customer thousands of dollars.

Homeowners, make sure you select a heating and cooling contractor that does a full system evaluation during their consultation.

PSA: Go outside now and look at your air conditioning system! If it's dirty like this one or worse, you're likely paying TOO MUCH to operate your system. Neglecting to clean your heating and cooling system makes it work harder and less efficient.
