Have you noticed a "powdery" white substance growing on your plants? It's (probably) powdery mildew, an extremely common disease that affects many ornamental plants and garden crops!

The fungi that cause powdery mildew all belong to the family, Erysiphaceae. Some powdery mildew fungi attack several different host plants, but most attack only a single host or, at most, only a few species. Most powdery mildew fungi produce a conspicuous white to grayish growth of fungal mycelium on the surface of the diseased plant part.

The prolific growth and sporulation of the fungus on the surface of leaves and other plant parts give the affected
tissue a talcum powder-like appearance, hence the name โ€œpowdery mildew." The new growth of infected plants may be completely covered with powdery mildew. As a result, new growth may be dwarfed, and the leaves, stems and young shoots may be curled. In addition, shoot tips may be killed and buds may fail to open. Powdery mildew can also be severe on older leaves or plant parts. Leaves that are heavily infected with powdery mildew may become chlorotic and senesce early.

Powdery mildew fungi attack a variety of ornamental plants grown in Virginia. Photinia, crape myrtle, dogwood, lilac, Japanese euonymus, wintercreeper euonymus, and many crabapple cultivars are highly susceptible and can be seriously damaged by powdery mildew infection. Many herbaceous ornamental plants are also susceptible to powdery mildew.

We want to take a moment to acknowledge that, due to the uncertainty caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, there are many new and seasoned gardeners suddenly interested in producing their own food. We have a number of resources for you at the bottom of this post!

While we are not concerned about the integrity of our food supply (shout out to Virginia farmers and Virginia Cooperative Extension), growing your own vegetables at home does create a more resilient food system and offers many other benefits, including an opportunity to engage with nature, the chance to try new and exotic vegetable varieties you can't find in stores, fun, and personal fulfillment.

If you have questions about growing your own food in Virginia--or you're just wondering how you can get started--we have compiled some of our best research-based publications on home horticulture here: https://ext.vt.edu/lawn-garden/home-vegetables.html

We are so excited to see this recent interest in gardening, though we wish the circumstances were different, and we have this message: the Extension Master Gardener program is here to help and support you!

You can find a team of local Extension Master Gardeners in almost every county in Virginia who are eager to offer you advice and education. You can reach your local Extension Master Gardeners via your local VCE office (find it here: https://ext.vt.edu/offices.html) or by searching online or on Facebook.

Whether you're converting your front yard to vegetable beds, propagating indoor plants, reseeding a lawn, mitigating runoff into a local waterway, planting a rain garden--you name it--Master Gardeners can help.

No matter where you're starting from, we welcome you to join us in the garden this spring, and in the springs to come.

Palm trees in the snow?! Believe it or not, there are cold-hardy palms you can grow here in Virginia! The needle palm (Rhapidophyllum hystrix) pictured here is the most cold-hardy palm in the world, reported to withstand temperatures well below zero.

Two other palms can be grown in Virginia: the Chinese windmill palm (Trachycarpus fortunei), a trunking palm, and the dwarf palmetto (Sabal minor) are both hardy to the lower single digits. They may suffer some leaf burn or even defoliation, but tend to recover quickly come spring.

Other "surprise" plants for Virginia include hardy yucca and hardy eucalyptus.
