Today we found 11 ppm of carbon monoxide at this furnace. ⚠️
For us, that is not a “let’s keep an eye on it” situation.
We disabled the unit, explained the concern to the homeowner, and provided a replacement option. ✅

Here’s the scary part about CO:
you can’t see it, you can’t smell it, and you can’t taste it. 😬

What We Find in the Wild 👀
This one gets filed under:
“Well… that’s definitely one way to do it.” 😂
Someone adapted a package unit onto a manufactured home with some pretty creative ductwork.
The problem is, creativity only gets you so far.
This setup is dealing with poor airflow and short cycling, so even though it technically runs, it isn’t performing the way it should.
We’ve recommended removing it and replacing it with a 3-zone mini split system that actually fits the home and the way the space needs to be conditioned.
No need to bash the old work — sometimes the best lesson is just:
Just because you can… doesn’t mean you should.

This is exactly why we do more than just make sure the heat turns on.
During a routine furnace tune-up, we found years of slow condensate leakage that had been quietly causing rust and corrosion inside the unit.
Nothing dramatic. No big failure. Just a small problem that had been going on for a long time.
We traced it back to the condensate pump, replaced it, and stopped the leak before it had a chance to create even more damage.
That’s the value of preventative maintenance.
A good tune-up isn’t just about cleaning a filter and checking the thermostat. It’s about catching the little things early — leaks, worn components, loose connections, drainage issues, and anything else that could turn into a much more expensive repair later.
Small leak. Big mess over time.
If your system hasn’t been checked in a while, fall is a great time to do it.

What We Find in the Wild 👀⚡
Sometimes the previous homeowner knows just enough to be dangerous. 😂
This sub panel was one of those jobs.
The buyer was actually made aware of it during the home inspection, so there were no surprises — but once we opened it up, it was pretty clear there had been some DIY creativity going on.
The panel technically had power.
That does not mean it was right.
We came in, cleaned up the wiring, corrected the problem areas, and brought the panel back to a safe, code-compliant condition.
A lot of electrical issues don’t announce themselves right away. They can sit there quietly for years until heat, load, age, or one more “quick fix” finally pushes things too far.

What’s hiding behind your electrical panel cover? ⚡

Most homeowners never look inside their electrical panel — and that’s exactly why small issues can go unnoticed for years.
Loose connections, overheated terminals, corrosion, aging breakers, overloaded circuits, or questionable past repairs can all develop over time.

One of the biggest things we look for is heat.
When a connection becomes loose or damaged, electrical resistance can increase. More resistance means more heat, and that heat can lead to nuisance trips, damaged components, or eventually a much bigger problem.

A panel inspection isn’t about trying to sell you a new panel.
It’s about checking that the system is still:
- properly connected
- clean and dry
- free of visible heat damage
- correctly sized for the loads in the home
- operating the way it should
If your home is older, you’ve added new HVAC equipment, a hot tub, EV charger, generator, major appliances, or simply can’t remember the last time anyone inspected the panel, it may be worth having it looked at.

A little something different from the usual HVAC and electrical posts.

For those who don’t know me personally, I’m Wade, the owner of Air Design & Electric.
When I’m not working, one of the things I’ve really gotten into lately is mountain biking around Prescott. Hard to complain when this is the view you get halfway through a ride.
One of the reasons I love living and working here is exactly this — the trails, the mountains, the weather, the people, and having places like this right in our backyard.

Owning a local business can make it easy to feel like you’re always “on,” so getting outside for a few hours is one of the best ways I’ve found to reset and come back with a clear head.

Your furnace turning on doesn’t always mean it’s operating safely.
This older package unit tested at just 1 ppm of carbon monoxide, which is exactly what we want to see.
That’s why carbon monoxide testing matters.
CO is a colorless, odorless gas produced during combustion. On older furnaces and package units, things like dirty burners, poor combustion, venting issues, or age-related equipment problems can all affect how cleanly the system operates.
A lot of homeowners assume their in-home CO alarm will catch everything. You should absolutely have working CO alarms in the home, especially near sleeping areas, but those devices are designed primarily as safety alarms — not as low-level diagnostic instruments.
Our testing equipment can detect much lower readings and help us spot a developing issue before it turns into a major comfort or safety problem.

⚡ WHEN THE POWER GOES OUT… WHAT STAYS ON?
