Air conditioning saves lives during dangerous heat.
But the uncomfortable truth is this: the way we cool ourselves can also add to the warming that makes cooling more necessary.
As heat waves become more intense, air conditioning is no longer just about comfort. For older adults, children, outdoor workers, and people with health conditions, it can be a life-saving shield against heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
So the answer is not “stop using AC.”
The real challenge is how to cool people without making the planet even hotter.
Air conditioning already uses a huge amount of energy. Our World in Data reports that AC accounts for about 7% of global electricity use and around 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The International Energy Agency has also warned that rising demand for cooling will become one of the major pressures on future electricity systems.
And AC has two climate problems.
First, it needs electricity. If that power comes from fossil fuels, every hot day can drive more emissions.
Second, many cooling systems use refrigerants that can be powerful greenhouse gases if they leak or are not properly handled at the end of the unit’s life. The UN has warned that emissions from air conditioning and refrigeration are expected to rise sharply without cleaner cooling policies.
That is the feedback loop:
The planet gets hotter.
More people need cooling.
Cooling demand rises.
More energy gets used.
More emissions can follow.
And the heat problem gets harder to solve.
But blaming individuals for turning on the AC during a heat wave misses the point.
People should not have to risk their health to prove they care about climate change.
The real solution is smarter cooling: cleaner electricity, efficient AC units, better insulation, shaded buildings, reflective roofs, trees, urban green spaces, and safer refrigerants.
Because the goal is not to suffer through the heat.
The goal is to build homes, cities, and energy systems where staying cool does not help make the crisis worse.
