As we draw near the end of the first round of treatments I want to talk about two things I have been asked and have seen over the past month. Scalping and Fertilization.

Scalping is typically done in the spring to remove the dormant layer of grass and allow more sun to reach the lower levels of the grass. What this does is incentivize growth and green up which is great when done at the right time. The biggest issue is most people do it way too early. I always recommend waiting until March (preferably Mid-March) and watching the weather. A late frost after scalping can set the yard back significantly. As far as scalping height goes it will depend on your grass type and how tall it was mowed last.

Fertilization is a big topic of discussion this time of year as well. Simply put it is too early as well. There are certain fertilizers you can put down earlier, but the high nitrogen fertilizers everyone wants to use can cause issues in your lawn this time of year. They can create fungal issues, weak top growth, and weak root systems. You typically want to wait until the grass has completely greened up and is actively growing before applying fertilizer. This is usually in April or May for many yards.

If you yard still looks dormant like either side on the picture below now is a great time to scalp your yard. Scalping is the process of mowing lower to remove the build up of dead material. It allows sun to penitrate deeper and warm the soil causing the grass to green up quicker. Scalping will look different depending upon your grass type. Bermuda grass can be scalped as low as your mower can go meanwhile St Augustine will benefit from a 1.5-2 inch mowing since it should be mowed at 3-4 inches tall. An easy rule of thumb is 1/2 of your projected regular mowing height.
