In 1956 Herbert Kale and his wife opened a 10-acre (since expanded to 14) landscaping business in Princeton, NJ. Herbert was a retired World War II army veteran who was raised on a farm. Since there were no available fields to plant crops, he decided landscaping would be a good alternative way to satisfy his craving to work with nature. Herbert took landscaping courses at Rutgers and also did some

self-teaching before opening Kale’s Nursery and Landscape, Svc. Herbert’s son Douglas began helping out at the family business when he was around the age of 12. After Douglas earned his degree at Rutgers he joined the family business full time in 1972 and took over as president in 1976. From there Douglas purchased additional land in Solebury, PA for the purpose of growing their own plant material. Shortly thereafter the Garden Center was created to help the locals procure quality plants with a large selection not readily available. Kale’s has consistently grown over the last 65 years and eager to maintain their high standards and satisfied customers.
