Your fish tell you a lot about your pond's health.

• Fish behavior can provide early warning signs of problems
• Gasping near the surface may indicate low oxygen levels
• Increased hiding can be a sign of stress or nearby predators
• Reduced activity may point to water quality concerns
• Healthy fish are generally active, alert, and feeding normally

Your fish interact with the pond environment 24/7, which means they're often the first to notice when something changes. By paying attention to their behavior, you can catch potential issues before they become serious problems. Sometimes the best pond diagnostic tool is simply observing your fish.

When it comes to ponds and water features, expertise matters.

There’s a big difference between a contractor who builds ponds and a pond specialist who understands every detail that goes into creating a safe, healthy, and long-lasting ecosystem for your family, pets, and fish.

Specialized knowledge. Thoughtful design. Trusted expertise. That’s how we do it.

If you're considering a new pond, water feature, or looking for expert guidance on an existing one, we'd love to help you get it right from the start.

Send us a message — we're here to help.

"I highly recommend Ben and Superior Ponds! They are professionals and are THE experts in ponds and water features, meaning, they are not landscapers who also do ponds. There is so much that goes into being sure your pets, children, and pond friends (fish) are safe and that your pond and water feature investment is built correctly and properly maintained. We are so lucky to have them in Minnesota!"

Is pond maintenance mandatory?

If you want your pond to stay healthy, beautiful, and functioning properly, then yes—regular maintenance is essential.

Ecosystem ponds are designed to be low-maintenance, but they're not maintenance-free. Over time, debris builds up, equipment experiences wear, and water quality can become imbalanced.

Routine maintenance helps protect your fish, plants, and equipment while preventing small issues from turning into costly repairs.

Think of it like caring for a car: a little ongoing attention goes a long way toward keeping everything running smoothly.

💬 Not sure what kind of maintenance your pond needs? Send us a message—we'd be happy to help you create a plan that works for your pond and your lifestyle.

Pond Tip Tuesday! 📌

One of the most common pond mistakes happens at feeding time.

It’s easy to give fish a little too much, but any food left behind eventually breaks down in the water. That extra waste can fuel algae growth, reduce water quality, and put unnecessary stress on your filtration system.

A simple rule: feed only what your fish can eat in a few minutes and avoid letting leftovers sink to the bottom.

Small habits like this make a big difference in keeping your pond clear, healthy, and easy to maintain.

"I've been working on the skimmer hole... all the live long day!"

Tegan out here digging the future home of a new skimmer/pump box while the rest of us provide absolutely critical moral support from a safe distance 😅

People see the finished work, they don't always see the hole digging, rock moving, mud-covered reality that comes first.

Every beautiful pond starts with somebody willing to dig a hole! Today, that somebody is Tegan 🤣

Apparently Flo from Progressive is trying to get into the pond market...

I don't know, Flo. Building a lake seems like a pretty aggressive upsell when all the customer wanted was a backyard water feature 😅

Next thing you know she'll be quoting koi fish coverage, waterfall deductibles, and comprehensive algae protection!

Stay in your lane, Flo. We've got this one covered.

You don't hire a mechanic to perform heart surgery.

And you don't hire a landscaper to fix your pond.

This pond came to us with multiple leaking liners stacked on top of each other from previous landscaper repair attempts. Unfortunately, multiple leaking liners still = multiple leaking liners.

Adding more liner on top doesn't fix the underlying problem. Eventually, the leaks, plumbing issues, and installation mistakes still have to be addressed. Many landscapers bank on it being your future problem, they've already taken your money and left no warranty.

That's why proper diagnostics and solutions matter. Before you can fix a pond, you have to understand why it's failing in the first place. A $295 Diagnostics Service gives you a transparent view of your pond with clear next steps.

Can ponds be safe for kids and pets?

Absolutely — safety can be built into the design from the very beginning.

Features like shallow areas, gradual edges, strategic rock placement, and even pondless waterfalls can help create a space that feels both beautiful and family-friendly.

Every backyard is different, which is why we take the time to understand how your space is used and design around your comfort level and lifestyle.
