The issue was the toilet was double flushing he would pull the handle once and before it stopped, it would clear the bowl twice. I adjusted the flow and I adjusted the volume and I tried a new Korky flapper. It got better, but was not perfect.

My last ditch effort was purchasing a $15 flapper

That combined with my minor adjustments fixed the double flush.

Customer states: water is coming out of this doohickey when I run the dishwasher.

Me: let’s take a look. Oh I see your hose is kinky

Customer: excuse me?!

Me: the drain hose from your air gap to your disposal is kinked causing water to back up out of your air gap. It happens with age. I’ll replace it!

Sometimes I have to show some love to my own house I’ve been doing quite a few things I’ve put off lately. Today I swapped out the Tiffany style entry way light to a more modern flush mount.

The Tiffany style worked well for our formal dining room which was right as you entered, but my stubborn self finally admitted formal dining rooms are dead and we can use the space more effectively by going a different direction.

Owning a home is a constant list of stuff to do. I am no exception, even if I am handy. Sometimes you make a choice not to do something when you know you should, but you have so much other stuff going on you just let it go. I didn’t clean out my gutters properly after Autumn. Now we are approaching Autumn again and a lot of rain this week as well and I had dams of leaves and debris in my gutter that I knew would make everything worse if I didn’t act now . I spent about three hours this morning cleaning out my gutters a job I thoroughly hate . There are pros and cons to having large trees on your property. One of the cons is an annual gutter clean out.

I did, however, find a portion of an American flag and a steak knife in the gutters… Bonus

A botched cabinet painting and hardware install from a previous person landed on me to clean up and fix. I took my time and think it’s a lot better. The deal I made the customer is if she doesn’t like what I did it’s free if she likes it then we will redo all the cabinets and drawers for an agreed upon amount. I hope she likes it :)

Something I do a bit different than most handymen in my opinion is educate. This customer’s toilet seat was loose. I of course, can just fix it and charge them and move on or I can fix it and educate them on how I did it because it is something that a homeowner can handle even if they’re not handy. I always choose the latter when I can. I love to see people empowered, and I also feel strongly that if you take care of someone above and beyond they are more likely to call you back for other things or refer you to their friends and family.  making this video added 10 seconds to my day, but can save this customer money going forward because they’ll never have to call me for this again.

You never know what walks of life people come from. Maybe you think tightening a toilet seat is something you should never pay for, but there are lots of people that have gone their entire life without ever having to tighten a toilet seat because someone in the house always did it for them, and maybe that person has passed away or has become disabled, etc…
