If you’ve walked outside lately and noticed tiny mounds of dirt popping up in the cracks of your driveway, or lines of ants marching along your patio, you aren’t alone! 📈☀️

As the Utah summer heat kicks into high gear, local ant colonies of all shapes and sizes get incredibly busy expanding their nests and foraging for resources. 🐜🔥

Why do they head toward the house? 🤔🏡

Ants don't just stay out in the yard; they are natural explorers. 🗺️ They usually wander toward our homes looking for three basic things:

Summer Snacks: 🍪 They have a massive appetite for sweets, grease, crumbs, and even pet food left out on the back porch or kitchen floor. 🐶🥫

A Quick Drink: 💧 Ants get incredibly thirsty in the summer heat. Gutter downspouts, leaky outdoor spigots, and damp flower beds right next to the foundation are like an all-you-can-drink oasis for them. 🌊

Easy Highways: 🚗 The tiny gap where your landscaping or walkways meet your concrete foundation provides a perfectly shaded, protected path for them to travel safely right along your home. 🧱

Simple ways to keep them outside this weekend 🛠️✨

The absolute best defense against an indoor ant invasion is simply making your home a little less inviting. 🛑 Here are a few quick, practical things you can do around the yard:

Check the Spigots: 🚰 Take a quick peek at your outdoor hoses and spigots to make sure they aren't dripping, and try to let the soil right next to your house dry out a bit between waterings. 🌤️

Give the House Some Breathing Room: 🌳 Trim back any low bushes, tree branches, or heavy mulch a few inches from your siding. When leaves or branches touch your walls, they act like a perfect bridge for ants to bypass the ground completely. 🪵

Inspect the Doors: 🚪 Take a look at your sliding glass doors and basement windows. Swapping out worn weatherstripping or sealing up small cracks in the old exterior caulk can completely cut off their favorite entry points. 🔍

As the weather warms up here in Utah, you might start seeing some activity under your eaves ☀️. While the instinct is often to clear everything away immediately, there’s actually a benefit to leaving those old, inactive paper nests from last year right where they are 🏠.

Wasps are surprisingly territorial. When a new queen is looking for a spot to start her colony, seeing an existing nest (even an empty one) often signals that the "prime real estate" is already taken 🙅‍♂️. It’s nature’s own way of saying "no vacancy."

It has been such a weird start to the year here in Utah! ☀️ Instead of the typical spring transition, we started out so warm and dry. Because of that, insects like ants 🐜 and spiders are waking up a bit earlier than usual and scouting for new homes.

We love sharing knowledge to help you protect your space without needing a technician to come out. If you are doing some spring cleaning this week, here are 5 quick things you can do to keep pests outside where they belong:

1️⃣ Check the foundation: Walk around your home and look for any small cracks or crevices around doors and windows where bugs could squeeze in.

2️⃣ Tidy up the perimeter: Clear away dead leaves and debris that piled up against your home's foundation over the winter.

3️⃣ Check your screens: Make sure window screens are intact and fit tightly to keep out early flying insects.

4️⃣ Fix outdoor leaks: Repair any dripping faucets or hoses that create puddles. Pests are actively scouting for moisture right now—especially wasps! 🐝 They absolutely love water and water features like pools and fountains, and they can be attracted to them from a mile away.

5️⃣ Wipe down counters: Keep kitchen surfaces clear of crumbs to avoid attracting scouting ants.
