I have had inquiries about grinding stumps from blown over trees. I had the opportunity to do this one recently that I thought would be good to share.

Sometimes people don't think that a machine the size and power of mine can work in tight areas. While I do need an 8ft wide path a tractor has better visibility and is much more maneuverable than a car. This allows me to squeeze it into places that you would never want to take a car. On this recent job I was asked to remove a 6ft diameter red oak stump from a cemetery. I had to work carefully and lift my implements over the grave markers but I not only ground the stump, I removed the chips and smoothed the surface afterwards. The customer was so pleased with the work that he had me do two more stumps while I was there.

I was called to clean up a fence row recently. Trees had grown up along the fence row and around the net wire. The stumps had to be left higher than the fence had been since chainsaws can't cut through steel wire. You can see two of the stumps behind the tractor and one in front. The wire has been cut off at the stumps and pulled away from my machine so that I won't get tangled up.

A couple of days ago a customer asked me if I kept a log of crazy job requests. I answered "Sort of, I post them on Facebook." So here it is, he didn't want his (or should I say his wife's) stump ground up, he wanted it relocated. It seems that he is a wood craftsman and had built a "Fairy House" as a yard ornament and had placed it on a tree stump. Not just any old stump, this one had character. But now they were selling that house and yard and moving across town. But his wife loved that Fairy House and the stump it was on. So the only thing to do was to move the stump and I was chosen for the task.

There is something rewarding about taking on jobs that test your skills. I was called out recently to grind the stump of a tree that had grown over a curb and onto the road. Of course I was supposed to leave the curb and road intact.

Unlike tree removal stump grinding is not well defined. The first issue is what to do with the excess chips and there can be quite a few. I have seen some people just pile them back on the stump but that leaves a mess for the home owner to deal with and is sometimes used to literally cover up a poor job. I always try to remove the clean chips. Fortunately, if you are in the city of Pulaski the city will pick up the chips if placed by the road. Outside of the city I work with the homeowner to find a place to leave the chips. If there is not a better option I can remove the chips at extra cost. The second issue is how deep to grind. I generally grind down until I am mostly getting dirt. Then I pull the loose dirt and remaining chips back in the hole and tamp it down. I try to leave a low mound that can be mowed over but will eventually settle to be reasonably level with the yard. Generally the homeowner is satisfied with leaving some chips in the yard. I can do more cleaning but that does take extra time and money.

One of the things that I enjoy about this job is solving challenges. One that I had recently was removing from stumps from a raised flower bed enclosed with a brick wall without damaging the wall, moving the benches or damaging the awning between the two beds. This project was a Bridgeforth Middle School and is just one of several that I have done for the school system at no charge. Thanks to PES for giving me access to mature wood chips, my friend Greg for loaning me a dump truck to haul them in and the maintenance department for the school system helping to spot me in the confined work area and with chip cleanup.

The photos below chronical the two beds with tree stumps as I found them building ramps with the chips to get over the wall, grinding the stumps, removing the ramps, cleanup and the final product. I wish that I had more a better photos but when you work alone that is difficult.

Thanks to my wife Dorothy for picking out the plants and helping plant them. Actually, she did more of that portion of the job than I did.

It was not my idea to put the sign in the finished bed, I thought that it looked tacky but the school principal wanted to thank me and that was the best way she could.

I recently had my definition of a big stump recalibrated. This one was absolutely huge. To further complicate matters due to its size the tree service that removed it could not get any lower than what you see so it was left about 3ft tall. It was about 5 feet in diameter where it was cut, about 9ft in diameter where the base went into the ground but that area was raised up so that I had to take up an area about 16ft in diameter to get the yard flat. It was a small front yard and I was soon swimming in chips. Fortunately, the tree service came back out with their dump trailer for me to put chips in and I loaded it three times. I feel sure that we removed over 15 tons on chips and dirt to get the yard as level as the customer wanted it. While the sap wood was soft the heart wood was seasoned red oak and was very hard. I also had to keep all the work confined to the grassy area as the customer did not want his flower beds disturbed and there is about a 2' high retaining wall by the street that I had to be careful not to damage.

I had a job recently to remove a tree that had blown down. The customer had already removed all that he could cut with his 16" chainsaw for firewood.
