It’s not everyday we get a chance to revitalize a 1780’s brick mansion built by a revolutionary war captain situated in the northern tip of the Shenandoah Valley. The challenge has been to design a renovation/addition to this exquisite example of early Federalist style Architecture, add a world class Michelin Star “fishbowl” kitchen, and renovate the existing structure to house dining rooms, a wine tasting room, a Speakeasy, a wine cellar, and guest suites.
Our task was to make all of these modifications to the building without diminishing the historic heart and soul of the property. The additions incorporate a modern and minimalist design language and a dark color palette to clearly demarcate what was built in the 1780’s vs. what is being built today. The roof massing of the fishbowl kitchen mirrors the roof of the existing main house and summer kitchen to maintain a dialogue with the existing forms, yet the color palette and fenestration clearly separate the new addition from the original house.
