Operations manager: Hired out of high school 10 years ago.

My lead foreman Kenny: Hired out of high school 8 years ago and worked during the summers while in high school for me.

One of my sales leaders: Worked for me during high school and returned to be with the company going on a total of 7 years I believe now.

Eric and Joseph are digging holes, both are 19. A LOT of runway ahead of them.

Today as I stopped by and watched for a moment with a pep talk as “El Jeffe” (The bossman). I told them that if we could rewind time, I was literally doing the exact same thing as them 20 years ago. I turn 40 this month.

“What can we do to keep advancing here” asked one.

“Keep digging, be consistent, soak up knowledge like a sponge, and don’t get in a hurry.”

Not much has changed even for me as the owner of the business. Keep going, never quit, keep learning. That’s where the “magic formula” of success occurs. In the mundane, day after day, year after year grind of life and business!

Here at this business I have the best crew. It’s a brotherhood (and I just so happen to be the older brother). I try my best to build them up, and have not always been the “easy” boss to work for. The thing is, life isn’t easy, and business certainly isn’t easy either. Recognition, appreciation, and commitment have been the bedrock of keeping quality people around. 3 of my top guys I hired right out of high school, they’re now in their late 20s, one of which has been here for nearly 10 years. I type out thank you letters occasionally. Since most people quit because of “management and leadership.” Most of those give the reason of “lack of recognition” as one of the main reasons. Yes, a good wage is vital, but it just goes to show that even in the fading final days of 2024, people still want to know that their hard work is seen. I see you crew!

This is a picture that’s about 8 years old. Just sent to me today by the young kid with the backwards cap. Cody I hired out of high school and trained him up as a little pup. We’ve hard some hard times but many more good times together. This picture was of us doing some volunteer work down in Mexico. 🇲🇽. I was showing him how I measured for an over frame layout. Fast forward 8 years and he’s the lead pack dog of our company. Operations manager and an absolute maverick with nearly all things related to building. In many ways we are told, “It’s not personal, it’s business.” I do not agree with that philosophy, as business (much like so many areas of life) is all about relationships and is very very personal. I was a young father in that picture, Cody is now a young father. I was trying to teach and lead, Cody now teaches and leads. Good for you you’re making el jefe a proud man. 🫡. 🤟

Not a bad performance taking this dilapidated garage and turning it into something quite nice. Granted we can’t take all of the credit, we just fixed the roof, rotten studs, dirt that was up against the siding, reframed windows and doors, installed blocking and bracing to straighten walls, infilled concrete for the perimeter footings and replaced a ton of framing. The roofing and siding was done by and paint by an unknown vendor. But all in all…🤩
