A wet spot under the pump does not automatically mean you need a new pump.

Here’s how to narrow it down:

A shaft seal leak usually shows up between the pump’s wet end and motor, near the seal plate. Water may drip from the bottom of the housing and can eventually damage the motor.

A lid O-ring leak usually leaves water around the clear lid, lid groove, or clamp. It may also cause air to enter the system and make the pump lose prime.

Water can travel, so the exact source matters. Before inspecting anything, shut off power at the breaker and verify the pump cannot start.

Check for:
• Moisture around the lid and O-ring groove
• Water below the seal plate
• Cracks or damage near the impeller area
• Motor age and overall condition
• Amp draw compared with the motor nameplate rating

A seal or O-ring repair often makes sense when the motor is in good condition and the housing is sound. Replacement may be the better call when the motor is old, amp draw is high, the seal plate or housing is damaged, or multiple major parts are failing.

In the East Valley, late-September dust and wind are still loading filters. Don’t shorten pump runtime yet just because temperatures are easing.

Mid-September pool check for East Valley homeowners and property managers:

As monsoon dust settles and bather load drops, don’t let your pool maintenance slide too far.

• Check filter pressure against your clean baseline. A noticeable increase can mean the filter is loading up with dust and debris.
• Empty skimmer baskets regularly so water can circulate properly.
• Don’t cut pump runtime too aggressively while dust is still blowing. Fine dust can keep entering the pool even when the water looks clear.
• Check water clarity and chemistry after windy days, not just after heavy use.

Small checks now can help prevent poor circulation and avoidable equipment stress later.

Last call before tonight’s storms: turn your pool ON and make sure the skimmers are running before the weather arrives.

A few minutes now can help keep leaves and debris from piling up in the pool:

• Keep skimmer valves 100% open.
• Run the pump on high speed overnight if high winds are expected.
• Strap down or bring in trampolines, furniture, umbrellas, and loose plants.
• After the storm, vacuum slowly and check the water before swimming.

Outflow winds and blowing dust can create a mess quickly. If your equipment does not start, or you are unsure what to check, visit https://casarizona.com/?via=casazx.

LAST CALL before tonight’s storms pass.

The severe thunderstorm warning remains active until 9:15 PM tonight, Aug. 31. Forecast conditions include wind gusts up to 60 mph, pea-sized hail, a dust wall, visibility under 1 mile, and a flood watch through Monday morning.

If it’s safe and dry to access your controls, turn your pool ON now and check these items:

• Keep skimmers 100% open.
• Run the pump on high speed overnight to catch leaves and debris.
• Strap down or bring in trampolines.
• Secure loose furniture, umbrellas, plants, and anything else the wind can move.
• Stay indoors during active lightning. Do not handle pool equipment while conditions are unsafe.
• Tomorrow morning, vacuum slowly so you don’t stir up settled debris.

A few minutes of preparation can make the cleanup easier after the storm.
