Our Enhancement Team wrapped up a simple turf conversion project this week.

The Board elected to keep the area clean and simple by converting the turf to decorative granite without adding additional plant material at this time. Sometimes the best solution is also the simplest.

This conversion will reduce water use, lower maintenance requirements, and provide a clean, finished appearance that fits the community’s long-term goals.

Projects like these are a great reminder that landscape improvements don’t always have to be complex to make a meaningful impact.

🌳 What you can’t see below the surface can eventually kill a tree.

This is a great example of girdling roots—roots that begin wrapping around the base of the trunk instead of growing outward naturally.

As the tree grows, those roots slowly choke the trunk and restrict the movement of water and nutrients. Over time, this can lead to decline, instability, and eventual failure.

Common causes include:
⚠️ Trees planted too deep
⚠️ Root-bound nursery stock
⚠️ Poor planting practices
⚠️ Lack of root flare exposure

Many times, the issue starts years before symptoms appear.

That’s why proper planting and root flare inspections are so important. Catching girdling roots early can often save the tree before permanent damage occurs.

This transition will help this Gilbert community save approximately 42,905 gallons of water every month while also reducing long-term maintenance needs and improving overall sustainability.
