Good Tuesday July 29, 2025… evening.
Jim Madden and I are in countdown final stages of cleaning out our”home” of 43 years… the big red, white and blue trimmed building at the intersection of Lee Road, Meadow Lane and State hiway 70. Former home of Madden Plumbing and Heating.
We have a literal ton of plumbing stuff that needs to go to someone who knows the value … willing to gently haggle, bring cash… no cards.. might accept personal or business check.
Seriously at least a ton…
Galv fittings 1/2” through 3”, galv ni***es, black iron/gas pipe fittings and ni***es.
Clean copper fittings.
Sink, lavy and toilet supplies , water heater flexes, ABS fittings, no-hub couplings, Fernco fittings, PVC fittings.
Repair parts for Moen and Price Phifster faucets, garbage disposals, sink waste assemblies…
Ball valves, garden bibs…
I am numb just thinking about getting it into the hands of handipersons plumbers and folks who know how to use…

Every time the lights go out.. music dies…
I roll my eyes and start counting… before I reach 7 I hear the generator fire.. smooth purr… transfer switch engages and “lights”!!!!
And I mentally thank the amazing electrical contractor who installed it all… at my home first and then at our building at the corner of Meadow and Lee roads..

The first time we came home to dark East Quincy… with our house lit up bright..
Husband said.. “ we have to turn it off”… “what ..why?” Asked I…
Well no one else has power and lights…
Excuse me … I chose to invest in a generator .. not a snow mobile or two.. no jet skies.. no toys at our house.
Invested in our comfort.. power lights heat.. refrigerator and freezer cold!

Sad to confirm rumors… Pat Mealey… Mealey and Sons Plumbing “passed” yesterday.

Is this really retirement???
I am working harder physically and still doing all the wife things I did while working…
Jim decided we should walk to breakfast this morning. My watch/walk program told me we had a 67 foot elevation change from Fairgrounds Road to Lucio’s . Looked like Mt Lassen to me.so far today 15,069 steps/6.42 miles and 2 hours till bedtime.
He said at one point today… we probably should have retired five years ago… probably but we had lots of fun, made great friendships.
We are blessed with great health so retirement at 77 and 78 works just fine.

As a 80% retired plumbing contractor I must speak my mind as a contractor and consumer … refrigerator icemakers without a doubt the worst design feature EVER thrust upon us by manufacturers .
It does not matter how awesome the plumber who installed the icemaker valve box behind the heavy refrigerator freezer stuffed into impossible tight space in your kitchen… sooner or later something is going to fail .
In my case… the valve itself is at least 20 years old.. approximate age of our home.
We don’t make ice.. we turned off the valve when we put this refrigerator in its tight impossible location 8 years ago.
Started finding ..stepping in liquid..at edge of appliance … the laminate flooring appeared to be swelling.
Not good .
Blamed each other opening the freezer.
Huummmm that’s really cold water .
Pulled appliance out, drained the line and really tightened off the valve.
More cold water on floor.
YouTubed appliances… found out how to remove door and drawers and frustrated contactor moment …. The valve in the icemaker box in the wall is by-passing water into the freezer… freezing on floor of freezer.. melting and leaking onto floor.
As semi retired contactor… my key man is up shop looking for a fitting to solve our problem.

My advice… pull out your appliance at least semiannually and check stuff closely …. Before you have problems.
Look under kitchen sink … really look. Take everything out…
I have a hot water dispenser tank with pipe,filter and fittings ..garbage disposal, double bowl waste piping… and dishwasher connection too… all possible leak points .

We are closed here at Madden Plumbing & Heating for demand services. Listed for sale for almost three years and not a single offer to even sit down and discuss .
Closed … I am answering the phone and providing referrals to CA licensed, bonded and insured contractors….plumbing and HVAC.

Oh my word!!! What happened to our beautiful October Tuesday air quality…???
Not really sure which is worse… in my neighborhood… in mid afternoon our side yard neighbor made me naively think there was a three day old dead skunk laying in the full afternoon sun…
Yeah I am 76 and naive … can we say dumb🙄😳😵‍💫….
Makes my eyes water !!!
And the proscribed burning … I know so so so important to forest health and our safety .
Seriously I will “take” forest debris smoke over w**d stink any day.
Again naive… took me years to under stand “skunkw**d” references!
When almost in my own back yard..
Give me a cute little black and white “kitty”….

Excited and proud to announce that Dalton Amaral and Tyler Amaral passed successfully the business law exam and plumbing trade exam.
California has two new licensed plumbing contractors.

Our official retirement date getting much closer…
Couple more projects to finish… then cleanup of building.
Yes it will be available ….

We love sharing items that are gently used or in great condition with our community - through our Free Stuff area. Recently, someone dropped off a couple of broken and worn chairs that really should have been disposed of. Please don't dump trash in our Free Stuff area....we'd hate to have to stop sharing..... on that note, if anyone wants some worn out broken chairs - stop by the free pile!
