Many of you don’t know that my son, Zion Durham, was stabbed in New Orleans on the evening of June 13th around 7:00 p.m.
He was walking back to his work apartment after leaving a friend’s place when a man he had never seen before ran up from behind and stabbed him. There were several others standing nearby watching. They didn’t jump him. They didn’t rob him. The only thing this man did was stab my son.
When Zion realized what had happened, he ran. He kept running until his lung collapsed and he physically couldn’t go any farther. During the chaos, he lost his phone and became disoriented. By God’s grace, someone eventually found him, covered in blood, and called an ambulance. I don’t know how long he was alone before someone came to help, but I thank Jesus they did.
Zion spent the next 10 days in the hospital fighting for his life. He required multiple blood and plasma transfusions. Five days into his hospital stay, he began experiencing severe, uncontrolled bleeding from his kidney, and we watched a crash cart being rushed into his room. It was one of the most terrifying moments of our lives.
He underwent several lifesaving procedures, including embolizations to stop the bleeding in his kidney, a chest tube to re-inflate his collapsed lung, and the placement of a filter to prevent blood clots from reaching his heart and lungs.
Through it all, family, friends, and churches came together to pray. And today, by the grace of God, Zion is home and healing. ❤️🩹
I am overwhelmed with gratitude and in complete awe of God. He spared my son’s life that day. The knife could have gone just one inch in another direction, and we could be telling a very different story. But from the moment I got the call, God gave me a peace that I cannot explain. Deep in my heart, I knew Zion Michael was going to be okay.
I’ve prayed over my children every single day, asking God for His protection, and He heard those prayers. Zion wasn’t living for God yet. But God used this tragedy to shake him awake while sparing his life. Today, Zion is walking a new path with Jesus, and as a mother, there is nothing I could be more thankful for.
It may sound strange, but I am not consumed with anger toward the man who tried to kill my son. Instead, I choose gratitude because I know God has a plan. What the enemy meant for evil, God is already using for good. I believe this testimony is only the beginning of what God is going to do in Zion’s life.

The person responsible still needs to be found. The New Orleans Police Department and Crime Stoppers have released a person of interest and are asking for the public’s help.
If you live in the New Orleans or Baton Rouge area—or know someone who does—please share the news story, the surveillance video, and the photo of the person of interest. Someone knows who this is.
One small correction: the news video mistakenly reports that a woman was stabbed, but if you read the article, you’ll see it was actually a man. This is Zion’s case.
Please continue praying for Zion’s complete healing, for justice to be served, and for the salvation of everyone involved. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for every prayer, every share, and every act of kindness shown to our family. We will never forget it. ❤️
