Tired of Hard Water Stains in Your Fiberglass Tub & Shower? Read This!
Have you tried every cleaning product on the market, only to find that nothing seems to make a dent in those stubborn hard water stains? You’re not alone! Hard water buildup is one of the toughest problems to deal with in fiberglass tubs and showers. But before you give up, let’s talk about what actually works—and what doesn’t.
Why Won’t Regular Cleaners Work?
Hard water stains are caused by calcium, lime, and magnesium deposits that cling to fiberglass. Over time, they form tough chalky white spots or orange/brown stains that basic scrubbing just won’t remove. CLR and other calcium-removing agents just don’t do enough to break down the layers of buildup on fiberglass. Especially on a well WITHOUT a water softener.
The Few Products That I Found Actually Work.
✔ Bar Keepers Friend – A powerful mineral remover.
✔ The Pink Stuff Miracle Cleaning Paste – Helps break down buildup.
✔ A Blue Non-Scratch Pad or Green Scotch Pad – This is what you’ll use to apply the cleaners (Warning: Be careful—scrubbing too hard can sand down the gel coat finish on a fiberglass unit!)
If stains are severe, repeated cleanings may be needed. Avoid excessive aggressive pressure, this can completely remove the gelcoat on a fiberglass surface.
This requires a lot of scrubbing as those mineral deposits are not an easy task to remove. So be patient and allow the product to work.
Protecting & Maintaining Your Fiberglass After Cleaning
Once you’ve removed the stains, keeping them away is key!
✅ Clean once a month using car soap with wax and a soft sponge. This keeps the surface protected while gently removing early buildup.
✅ Apply a spray wax monthly for a hydrophobic effect—this helps water bead up and flow toward the drain instead of drying on the surface.
✅ After every shower or bath, dry the surface with a towel. Hard water stains form when water dries and leaves behind mineral deposits, so removing moisture is the best prevention.
