Our team recently had the opportunity to tour the Colin G. and Nancy N. Campbell Archaeology Center alongside Sean Devlin, Senior Curator of Archaeological Collections.
Designed for both research and public engagement, the new center features state-of-the-art laboratories, curated collections, classroom space, an outdoor teaching courtyard, and public viewing areas where guests can observe archaeologists as they clean, study, and analyze artifacts in real time. The building’s architectural design blends modern glass elements with Colonial-inspired brickwork, connecting the new facility to Williamsburg’s historic character!
During the tour, our team got an inside look at the functionality behind each lab space while learning more about the archaeological process and what this facility will mean for researchers, historians, and visitors alike. One of the highlights was seeing the archaeological discoveries uncovered during construction, including a historic foundation and well. Preserving these findings throughout construction helped connect the archaeological discoveries made on-site with the research that will continue inside the center, creating a tangible link between the site's history and its future purpose.
As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary, the Archaeology Center serves as a place where the stories of the past can continue to be uncovered, studied, and shared. The facility offers a direct connection to the people, places, and events that helped shape the founding of the United States while supporting research that will provide new insights into America's earliest chapters.
We’re proud to continue working with the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation on a project that helps preserve, study, and share history for generations to come!
