We’re thrilled to announce that Robby Johnston, FAIA, has been elevated to the AIA College of Fellows - one of the highest honors in architecture, held by fewer than 3% of AIA members!

Robby was elevated in Object One: Design, a category recognizing architects whose work advances the aesthetic, scientific, and practical efficiency of the profession. Such work exemplifies excellence through a holistic approach that integrates creativity, functionality, sustainability, user-centricity, context sensitivity, and cultural relevance to create meaningful and impactful built environments that enrich the lives of people and communities.

This year, 78 architects were elevated (66 Fellows and 11 Honorary Fellows) for their leadership and impact. We’re proud to celebrate Robby’s vision, craft, and dedication to architecture that elevates both place and community.

We are pleased to announce Sycamore Court won a 2025 AIA NC Design Honor Award!
The jury, chaired by Bill LaPatra of and Kevin Kudo-King of had the following comments: “Some projects have a side and a less good side. This project had no bad sides. It was a thoroughly realized piece of work where everything was well thought out. From the scale that is sympathetic to the neighborhood to the softness of the grey wood siding and the screen material. It is inward looking but provides privacy; and it’s also full of light. It engages with the outdoors especially with the magnificent oak tree in a controlled yet uncontrived way. This project was simply a yes for us.”

From the Editor: “The Raleigh Architecture Company and The Raleigh Construction Company were founded during the post-recession wave in 2012 by partners Robby Johnston and Craig Kerins as a design-build operation. Since then, the companies have created more than 100 homes and commercial properties just in Raleigh. If you live there, you’ve passed by, dined in or even had your hair done in one of their projects. Johnston and Kerins recently received the prestigious Kamphoefner Award from AIA North Carolina for design excellence—not just for how their projects look, but also for the elevated quality of life they embody.”

The AC/BD Residence recently won a 2024 AIA NC Honor Award!
The jury, chaired by Melissa Farling with , shared the following: “This is an artful design. The jury appreciated the playful, well proportioned compositions of space, light, and material. The thoughtful attention to detail results in a casual sophistication that compliments the home’s siting and indoor/outdoor connections. The curved entrance is skillfully shaped from the arrangement of volumes providing a welcoming and distinct transition into the home.”
