Student experience is shaped as much by the “support” spaces as by instructional space. That’s why we emphasize learning environments beyond just classrooms — including media centers, commons, and breakout spaces — and why our project narratives frequently highlight day-lit learning commons and “Main Street” organization as cultural and functional anchors. When these spaces are designed intentionally, they help schools feel coherent, welcoming, and student-centered. The spaces in-between the classrooms end up supporting connection, collaboration, and adaptability, fueling students with the vibrancy they need to learn and grow.

What’s one feature you’ve seen in a learning commons that truly changed how students used the space? Let us know in the comments below!

Cumberland County is stepping into an exciting new chapter.

CityView’s recent article on the long‑awaited renovation of the Crown Theatre and Arena underscores just how transformational this project can be for the region. The community is ready for a modern, flexible, inclusive venue that elevates performance, strengthens civic identity and enhances the cultural landscape for generations to come.

At SfL+a Architects, this is the work that energizes us — partnering with communities to design spaces that foster connection, imagination and long‑term vitality. Our team’s deep roots in Fayetteville and decades of commitment to high‑performance, community‑centered design position us to support this next phase in meaningful ways.

And central to this effort is Eric Lindstrom, AIA, LEED AP, whose leadership and design vision consistently advance the aesthetic, functional and cultural goals of every project he touches. Eric’s experience across educational, mixed‑use and historic rehabilitation work brings the right blend of creativity, rigor and community awareness to a project of this significance. His commitment to design excellence ensures that spaces not only look exceptional, but also serve and uplift the people who use them.

The opportunity ahead is bigger than a renovation. It’s a chance to honor the Crown’s legacy while shaping a new standard for performance, gathering and community life in Cumberland County.

Exciting progress continues at the North Carolina Troopers Museum, where our team at SfL+a is proud to serve as the architects of record for this landmark project.

The new three‑story, 14,000‑square‑foot museum will share the history of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol from its founding in 1929 to the present day. Located just south of Downtown Raleigh on Garner Road, directly across from the Highway Patrol Training Academy, the facility is designed to welcome visitors into two levels of exhibition space featuring full‑sized vehicles from different eras, as well as a gift shop, recruitment center, and community room. The building also incorporates overnight lodging for Troopers traveling to the capital on official duty.

Outside, an undulating wildflower meadow frames the museum, echoing the State’s iconic roadside wildflower program and creating a vibrant, seasonal arrival experience.

With construction moving steadily and key components nearing completion, we’re excited for the project to deliver later this year. It’s been an honor to help bring this story to life, and we’re grateful for the partnerships that continue to make it possible.

More updates to come as we approach the finish line.

A special shout-out to the general contractor on the project, Metcon, Inc.!

Our team had an incredible time at the 2026 COSSBA National Conference connecting with education leaders, innovators, and partners from across the country. The energy on the exhibit floor was powerful, and we were excited to showcase how SfL+a Architects continues to push the boundaries of K-12 design.

Thank you to our amazing staff who represented the firm at our booth and shared our commitment to creating inspiring, energy positive learning environments. Your enthusiasm helped spark meaningful conversations with districts and decision makers from all 27 COSSBA member states and beyond. We truly appreciated the chance to be part of an event that brings together more than 1,500 attendees dedicated to improving public education.

Shout out to Robbie & Maxine Ferris, Mahan Kick, and Dottie Sloan.

We are proud to support communities that want schools designed for next generation learning and long-term sustainability. We are already looking forward to building on the momentum from this year’s conference and continuing the partnerships that started in Louisville.

Here is a look at some of the exciting moments from our time at the conference.

At the end of February, members of SfL+a Architects had the privilege of attending the Greater Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Celebration.

The event was a meaningful reminder of what makes City of Fayetteville, NC Government such a special place to work and build... its people, its leadership, and a business community that values recognizing peers who are making a lasting impact. Being surrounded by organizations and individuals committed to the growth and sustainability of the region reinforced why this city continues to mean so much to our firm.

Fayetteville has long been more than just one of our office locations... it’s a community that has shaped our work, our relationships, and our ongoing commitment to designing places that serve people first. We were grateful to the Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce for bringing the community together to celebrate excellence, innovation, and service across the region.

Congratulations to all of the nominees and award recipients. We were proud to be part of a night that reflected the strength and momentum of the greater Fayetteville community.

Strengthening Community Through Design at E.B. Frink Middle School

Recently, we celebrated an exciting milestone at E.B. Frink Middle School as the project reached its topping out. It was a meaningful moment not only for Lenoir County Public Schools, but also for everyone who has had a hand in bringing this new learning environment to life.

In fall of 2016, Hurricane Matthew tore through Robeson County, NC, destroying the community's planetarium.

Today, construction on the state-of-the-art Robeson County Career and Technical Center, Planetarium, and Science Center continues apace.

This 129,000 square foot facility is quickly approaching its grand opening, at which point students in Robeson County will be able to explore various vocational and technical fields, from drafting and culinary arts to automotive technology, carpentry, computer networking, EMT training, and welding. There will also be opportunity to explore the new cutting-edge planetarium which will be open to the public. We are all eagerly awaiting its completion.
