Today, we talk about the design decisions that are hard to change once you start building.

Some design decisions are easy to change later during construction, such as paint colors, light fixtures, and even finishes. But others are almost permanent once construction begins.

The home footprint and its orientation on the site, ceiling heights, window placement, and overall layout are incredibly difficult and expensive to modify after the fact. Anything that is a structural element is a big change order. Moving walls, adjusting spans, or reworking the roofline later can quickly become cost-prohibitive.

Good design is about making the right decisions early, when changes are still easy and inexpensive.
Because once you build, some choices aren’t just decisions; they are commitments.

We’re still over the moon to share that our Sossusvlei Visitors Center in Namibia has been honored with a Merit Award!

Located within the breathtaking Sossusvlei Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its towering red dunes and dramatic desert landscapes, this project was envisioned as a gateway to one of the world’s most extraordinary natural environments. Designed to protect and promote the park, the visitors center helps reduce environmental impact by supporting a shuttle-based transportation system while providing essential amenities for travelers in a climate that often exceeds 100°F.

Inspired by the flowing forms of the surrounding dunes, the building blends seamlessly into the desert, offering panoramic 360-degree views of the landscape.

We are deeply honored by this recognition and grateful to everyone who contributed to bringing this vision to life. This award celebrates not only thoughtful architecture, but also the opportunity to help preserve one of the planet’s most remarkable natural treasures for future generations.

Custom Homes Vs. Spec Houses. Are they the same?

At this point, if you have been following us for a bit, you know that we specialize in custom modern homes. I created this short to highlight the main differences between the two design approaches and the substantial experience and value the client receives.

What do you think you would like to know more about what architects do? I read you in the comments.

This project centers on renovating and expanding a 1,100 square-foot bungalow for a family of four in Raleigh’s community-oriented Five Points neighborhood near downtown. The family’s need for more space reflects a broader challenge in Raleigh: rising housing costs and limited affordable options for families transitioning to new stages of life.

The design solution includes a renovation of the existing house and a rear addition. The addition features a primary suite on the main floor and an ADU above, intended to serve as a home office during the week and a rental on weekends to help offset investment costs.

The angled architectural elements of the new structure are inspired by the textures of the original utility bricks and the hip roof of the existing house, blending old and new.

Z-House addresses the requirements of a couple seeking to share life experiences while maintaining a cohabiting partnership. Situated on a compact and sharply angled triangular lot near downtown Cary, the site posed the challenge of developing a single-story residence.
The architectural response was a z-shaped plan derived from arranging the program elements into a double "L" with the southern wing angled slightly outward toward the property boundary to enhance the south-facing courtyard and maximize its real estate.

We are delighted to share this short video of our PLUC Residence. If you would like to see the full video, make sure to visit our YouTube Channel, find the link in our Bio.

The PLUC Residence was developed for a family with an appreciation for design, efficiency, and contemporary living. They acquired a compact 1,400-square-foot chalet-style residence built in 1950, situated in a forested suburban area. The family required additional living space as well as improved spatial flow and connectivity.

Today, we talk about fees. Good architecture isn’t about spending more—it’s about spending smarter.
Architectural fees aren’t just a cost; they’re an investment that can save you significant money over time. A well-designed project reduces expensive mistakes before they ever reach construction. And during construction, we help protect your budget by reviewing work, clarifying details, and keeping the project aligned with the original intent so that the project is built how you wanted.

When conceptualizing aspirational residences, we adopt a comprehensive approach, responding to visionary ideas with practical, effective solutions.

In this instance, the design challenge posed was: 'How can we evoke the sensation of soaring between clouds and mountains?'

We developed a concept study for a client in the picturesque mountains of western North Carolina, with a Case Study home report emphasizing breathtaking views of the Appalachia range. This design comprises a bedroom studio, a spacious living room, and a kitchen with a cantilevered terrace, expertly crafted to create a sense of weightlessness. The concrete foundation incorporates a car garage and storage for outdoor gear.
