Project: Lam Beam chessboard table, with inset stone chessboard.
To start off, we sanded down the edges of the stone board to make sure we had smooth lines all around. Next we set out the board on the Lam Beam to get the board centered. Once this was done, we measured the distance from the router blade to the pre-drawn line, from there measured and built a frame around the board to those measurements. Using a hand router, and 1" mortising bit, we recessed into the Lam Beam a full 1" down, then sanded to create a smooth recessed space. Next we made the legs from 4x4's cut to 2'6" for a decent table height. Using a router, we cut a 3/4 concave down the length of the leg to break up the rough look and give a slightly decorative look. From there we rounded all 4 corners with a hand router and a 1/2 round over bit then sanded to a smooth surface. Using a drill press, we drilled 3" into each leg with a 1/2 wood drill bit, then, found the placement for each leg on the bottom of the Lam Beam. After drilling 3 holes at 3" deep with the 1/2 wood bit, we inserted 5 1/2" long 1/2 through bolts into each leg and sealed them in with epoxy. We then used a 3/4 wood auger to recess 2 1/2" into the leg holes on the Lam Beam, using 2" nuts, we placed them in the leg holes and set them with epoxy. With the legs secured, we gave one more good finish sanding, before treating the entire piece with boiled linseed oil to give it a bit of fresh color. The stone board was then placed and set with epoxy. Final finish to come.
