Jumping back in time for a history lesson.

Back in 2000-1700 BCE the Mediterranean Island of Crete, we bring you the very first flushing toilet!

But how is this possible? The early toilet was made of a stone seat over a channel of streaming water fed by pipes. A bucket of water dumped into the area would allow the “flushing” action to occur.

So while this may not be flushing in the sense of what we think today, it sure got those areas cleaned!

Have you ever heard the terms “hard water” and “soft water?” Have you ever wondered what that actually means?

You cannot tell if water is hard or soft just by looking at it. It is determined by feel and what happens to your items when they run through the dishwasher or washing machine.

Hard Water is determined by the amount of calcium and magnesium, as well as other minerals that are found in the water. The more minerals found in the water, the “harder” the water is considered.

So, how do you know if you have hard water?

Do you feel a film on your hands after washing them? This is caused by soap and calcium reacting causing soap scum. When washing your hands in hard water, you may need to rinse your hands longer to avoid this.
Are you finding spots on your dishes and glassware? This is caused by excess calcium deposits in your water.
When taking your clothes out of the washer you may find mineral stains on your clothes, and you may notice that your clothes start to wear out faster. Hard water can be very harsh on fabrics.
Do you have less water pressure? This can be due to the mineral deposits found in your pipes reducing water flow.

You find Water is considered “soft” when”
You get a good lather when you wash your hands.
Clothes look and feel cleaner
You have a good water pressure in your home
There is a slight sodium taste when you drink water as soft water tends to have more sodium.

So, do you have “hard” or “soft” water in your home? Keep looking for more ways to work with the water you have as there are pros and cons to both!
