A garden is never just a collection of plants it is a composition of structure, rhythm, and layers. Spending time in European gardens is always a reminder of these fundamental principles of garden design. The strongest gardens create a sense of order first, then allow nature to soften and animate that framework.

Here, clipped hedges create the bones of the garden, while trees provide height and enclosure. Lower layers of planting fill the spaces between, creating depth, texture, and a sense of discovery. Each layer has a purpose, and together they create a garden that feels both intentional and effortless.

Structure gives a garden its architecture. Layering gives it life.

It’s a beautiful reminder that good garden design isn’t about adding more it’s about creating relationships between what is planted, what is framed, and what is allowed to unfold.
