A full natural stone wraparound porch like this doesn’t just frame the home…it defines it.

On a busy, rustic western farmhouse, this becomes the place where life actually happens…
boots on the steps, kids running in and out, mornings that start early and evenings that last a little longer.

And unlike wood… this isn’t something you’ll be replacing in a few years.

Real stone holds up.
To weather. To use. To time.

This porch was built to make a statement the moment you arrive…and built to still be standing strong decades from now.

That’s the difference craftsmanship makes.

A fireplace should feel like it was meant for the home the moment you walk in. 🔥

This custom build features Echo Ridge Southern Ledgestone from paired with Natural Black Lime hearth slabs for a clean, grounded finish that anchors the entire room. The layered ledgestone gives the wall depth and texture while the darker hearth creates a strong visual base…a combination that feels both rustic and refined.

Stone fireplaces like this are one of the best ways to bring warmth, character, and long-term value into a home. When installed correctly, manufactured stone veneer delivers the look of full masonry with precision craftsmanship and durability that will last for decades.

At G. Phelps Masonry, we’ve been building custom fireplaces and stonework since 1987, combining traditional masonry knowledge with modern materials to create statement pieces that become the heart of the home.

Repair work should blend in….not stand out. 🫥Most people never think about mortar color… until a repair doesn’t match.

When we repair brick, the goal is simple: make the repair disappear.

In this clip, Glynn is mixing custom colored mortar to match the existing brickwork so the repaired section blends seamlessly with the original job. Mortar color, sand type, and mix ratios all affect the final look, and getting it right takes experience.

If you need brick repair, mortar color matching, or masonry restoration, we’re here to help.

Call or message G. Phelps Masonry for an estimate.

When a “finished” stone job starts falling apart… you call the guys who fix what others rush. 💪

Grey & Glynn were brought in after another mason’s work showed 40+ points of failure on this adhered stone veneer. The homeowner didn’t want a patch job….they wanted it done right.

Here’s what went wrong 👇

This is an adhered veneer that has no grout joints surrounding the stone…which means every piece relies entirely on what’s behind it to stay in place. Regular mortar alone doesn’t have strong adhesive properties for one-sided applications like this. It works beautifully when stone is fully surrounded (think of a diamond in a ring setting), but not when it’s acting like glue.

For a jointless adhered veneer, you need thinset with acrylic polymers designed to bond stone to a surface.

Common causes of failure like this include:
• Expansion and contraction from heat and cold
• Mortar mixed too dry
• Surface too smooth for proper bond
• Dust not cleaned from the stone
• Improper installation or rushed work

Grey & Glynn prep every stone by wiping it and bonding to a properly textured masonry surface….and they’ve never had delamination issues using this method. Unfortunately, they’re often called in after shortcuts show up months or years later.

Quality masonry isn’t just about how it looks on day one…it’s about how it holds up for decades.

If you want it done once and done right, you know who to call.

You’re not just watching dust get blown out of block… you’re watching the difference between a patch job and professional masonry done right.

This project started as an old garage doorway. The goal? Transform it into a solid CMU block wall so our client can convert the garage into a functional apartment space.

But before new rebar goes in… before epoxy sets… before block is laid…
Every drilled hole has to be cleaned out properly.

What you’re seeing in this ASMR clip is the most overlooked — and most critical — part of structural masonry work:

✔️ Drilling into existing concrete block
✔️ Blowing out all masonry dust
✔️ Preparing each hole for structural epoxy
✔️ Installing new rebar to tie into the existing wall

If you skip this step?
The epoxy won’t bond correctly.
The rebar won’t anchor properly.
And the wall won’t perform the way it should.

This is how you properly infill a doorway and restore structural integrity when converting a garage into living space — especially here in Northern California where building code matters and longevity matters.

Clean holes. Proper anchoring. Code-compliant reinforcement. No shortcuts. Ever.

If you’re planning a garage conversion, structural block wall repair, or custom masonry project in Redding, Red Bluff, Chico, Cottonwood, or surrounding areas — message us. We’d love to do it the right way the first time.

Second Generation Mason ⚒️| Est. 2007 🔥

Grey Phelps was raised in masonry. He laid his first brick at three years old under his father’s guidance and has worked on job sites nearly his entire life. After working summers through his youth, he joined the trade full time in 2007.

With nearly 20 years of hands-on experience, masonry has been his sole profession.

Grey specializes in custom artistic stonework, precision layout, and accurate bid calculation. Known for strong problem-solving skills and detailed ex*****on, he brings both craftsmanship and strategy to every project.

He is particularly skilled at listening to clients, understanding their vision, and implementing their ideas into a finished result that exceeds expectations.

While rooted in traditional masonry methods, Grey embraces modern technology to keep the business efficient, forward-facing, and competitive in today’s market.

He is deeply committed to delivering work exactly as promised…built to last and built with integrity.

Grey is a husband and father of five. Outside of work, he enjoys gardening, fitness, serving his family, and training in Jiu-Jitsu.

His long-term vision is simple: to continue building exceptional masonry across Northern California and, if his children choose, pass the trade on to a third generation.

Master Mason ⚒️| Established 1987 🔥

With nearly 40 years in masonry, Glynn Phelps represents the traditional foundation of G. Phelps Masonry.

He began his career in the Eastern San Francisco Bay Area as a hod carrier, learning the trade from the ground up. Glynn is an award-winning mason known for meticulous craftsmanship, precision layout, and a refusal to cut corners. His standard is simple: leave the job done right…and leave the space cleaner than he found it.

With four decades of hands-on experience, Glynn brings a deep portfolio of custom brick, block, and stone projects while continuing to integrate new ideas with time-tested methods.

Beyond the trade, Glynn is a devoted husband, father of two, and grandfather of seven. He is actively involved in his local community and church. In his free time, he enjoys hunting, custom knife making, travel, and time with his family.

Sometimes the call isn’t about building something new.
Sometimes it’s about making it right again.

When a vehicle collided with this building and took out the brick corner, the call came in for restoration—not replacement. Our job was to assess the damage, stabilize the structure, and rebuild the brick so it matched the original work in strength, layout, and appearance. No shortcuts. No patch jobs. Just solid masonry done the right way.

Brick repair takes more than stacking units back in place. It takes experience—matching existing materials, tying into the structure correctly, and restoring the wall so it looks like the accident never happened. That’s the goal every time: good as new, built to last.

This is the kind of work we take pride in. Real repairs. Real craftsmanship. Real solutions when things go wrong.

If you’ve got damaged brick, block, or stone—whether from an accident, age, or wear—give us a call. We’ll take a look and tell you what it really needs.

📞 Reach out to get on the schedule or save this for when you need a mason who knows repairs as well as builds.

Mud matters.

Every wall starts here. The mix. The feel. The way it loads on the trowel and sets on the block. Strength, bond, and longevity all come down to this step long before the wall ever goes vertical.

Too dry and it won’t grab. Too wet and it won’t hold. When the mud is right, everything else follows—clean joints, solid courses, and a wall that’s built to last. This is the foundation of good masonry work, even if most people never notice it.

No shortcuts. No guesswork. Just fundamentals done right, the same way they’ve been done for generations.

This is where craftsmanship lives.
