FIRST RAIN OF THE SEASON: WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

We’re getting our first rain of the season, and after months of hot, dry weather, it’s a good time to pay a little extra attention to the trees around your property.

As soil takes on moisture, conditions around a tree’s root system begin to change. As soils become wetter, they can provide less stability for roots, especially in trees that already have root damage, decay, restricted root systems, or other structural concerns.

The photos here are a real example of a tree failure involving the root system and wet soil. While today’s rain is nothing extreme, it’s a good reminder of what to watch for as we head into wetter weather.

A few things to keep an eye on:

• A tree developing a new or increased lean
• Soil lifting, cracking, or heaving around the base
• Exposed or damaged roots
• Hanging, cracked, or broken limbs
• Large dead limbs in the canopy
• Any sudden change in a tree that wasn’t there before

Rain doesn’t necessarily make a healthy tree unsafe, but changing conditions can expose problems that were already developing.

🌿 What We're Seeing Right Now | Powdery Mildew

Have you noticed a white, powdery coating on your crape myrtle, roses, or other ornamental plants?

This is often powdery mildew, a common fungal disease we see in late summer as warm days and cooler, more humid nights create ideal conditions for it to develop.

Left untreated, powdery mildew can weaken plants and carry over into the next growing season. Treating it now helps reduce its impact and gives your plants a healthier start next spring.
