✨ Details make the design!
We Love how this Phoenix office elevated their reception area by incorporating our rammed earth panels as the foundation of this stunning desk. That floating LED accent light makes the natural, hand-tamped textures glow! ✨
Fun fact: These panels are made from up-cycled materials that would otherwise go to waste. Beautiful and earth-friendly. 🌿

We were thrilled to be working on the Natural Resources Headquarters project, as we felt this type of project aligned with our values and goals for the future of green building. Many people may want to utilize rammed earth in their projects, but pour-in-place methods using on-site soils are not always an option. With this building being in the middle of the city of Sacramento, it was a perfect fit to utilize our 3” thick rammed earth panels as a way to bring the earth back into the building and see this project earn LEED Platinum status.

This was our largest project to date, with over 15,000 SF of paneling, dozens of custom sizes, and a heavily engineered frame redesign. While there were numerous challenges in this project, the success of the installation should be attributed to the Townsend and Schmidt crew's ability to foresee issues far enough in advance for the project management team to resolve. Their installation team, led by Alexander Morua, constantly faced changes in schedule from other trades, as well as issues with equipment availability and coordination. Through all this, they upheld their contracted pace of installation while outperforming the architectural specifications. Townsend and Schmidt brought a much needed can-do attitude to this prototypical installation; we could not have asked or hoped for a better partner in this endeavor.

These panels are going inside of a multi-story executive office building. Up close you'll see that the finish on our panels alternates between smooth and rough. Panels appear darker in the shade and lighter in the direct sunlight. You'll also note the changes between layers where the source material in the mix design changes. In the second photo, you'll see the importance of filling in seam lines when the colors change within the panel. Since these panels required returns on each end, you’ll see an example of a butt joint return going all the way up into the ceiling. You’ll also note in the middle where the bottom panels meet the top. All panels are floor-mounted so this client had to ensure the floor’s foundation could handle the weight of their full size panels.

This client wanted a very vibrant red color scheme for their 8” thick solid rammed earth monument sign. They sent us a cylinder to our manufacturing facility to go through our color matching process. This sign had to be poured upside down to create an angled top the clients were looking for. The metal sign panel was applied after delivery by BSC signs and dropped into the ground with our footer pre-attached.
This project was done in collaboration with Arthouse Design, Diverse Project Consultants, and BSC Signs.

When wrapping a corner with multiple color changes and strata lines, it is important to ram our panels next to each other so we can achieve this book-matching effect. This helps mimic the look and feel of pour-in-place rammed earth when we can wrap a corner with minimal break to the eye.

In this photo you’ll see a fireplace encapsulation with our 3” thick rammed earth panels. You’ll note they opted for a butt joint on the end and that our panels still allow for clients to mount items onto the wall because our panels can be drilled through in the field. You’ll notice a faint seam line halfway up the fireplace, as our max panel height is 5’ H, these are two panels stacked on top of each other to get to the total room height.

Here you can see nine rammed earth panels encapsulating the window section of this beautiful Malibu home. These panels appear much darker when shrouded in shade, but are the same color as all other panels in this project.

This large Malibu home went through an overhaul by interior designer Nicole Gordon and architect Mathieu Ribaut. “How do we open it up and make it feel connected to the outside?” Ribaut questioned. We feel the rammed earth panels used in this home contributed to bringing the outdoor/sandy environment into the home.

This custom rammed earth project utilized hexagonal rammed earth bases as pedestals for an exclusive Cartier jewelry launch. This project required a 3-week lead time for 17 pieces of different sizes and colors. With custom-made molds, this project was ambitious. These bases needed to have a hollow core to reduce weight and cover a steel base for the mounting of the case. The outer walls of the rammed earth needed to be thick enough so that the unreinforced rammed earth walls could hold their strength during cross-country transport. The client required an easy way to lift each base into place as their turnaround for installing these was quite quick as well. We came up with a mini-frame that bolted into the walls and could be lifted with straps through the top flat bar. These got on-site in the nick of time and looked beautiful for their exhibition.

Our Story

Rammed Earth Works is the original rammed earth builder in the United States, having built hundreds of high profile residences and commercial projects since 1976. You could say we wrote the book on Rammed Earth, which we did with The Rammed Earth Experience by David Easton, first published in 1982. The global popularity of rammed earth is due in large part to the technological innovations and consumer confidence that originated with Rammed Earth Works and continues today.
