Reonna Canney got connected to construction through accounting. “After I graduated a friend asked me to come work for her family's construction recycling company where she would also teach me bookkeeping. Then everything just went from there and all of the opportunities I've gotten since then have continued to be in construction.” Reonna notes that over the years she has learned how valuable the construction industry is, and her advice is, “Always go for it, and always be open to learning new things.”

Samantha Summers found stability—and happiness—as an Accounting Assistant in the construction industry. “I learned that I was pregnant and decided that warehouse and retail wasn’t going to cut it anymore, so I got my act together and went to college, got my Associate Degree and started on my Bachelor’s. I went through a couple of jobs in slightly different fields, but eventually found my home here with IWS and the crazy world of construction. I couldn’t be happier.”

Zarianne Morehouse's career transitioned from property management to construction management when the REIT (real estate investment trust) she worked for started systematically renovating all their older properties. That experience put her on the path to becoming an award-winning Project Manager. One of her guiding principles is prioritization. “Prioritizing is everything. In your work life, home life and personal values – it’s easy to get caught up in being reactive to every little thing, but if you can step back and say, ‘Is this really aligned with what I’m trying to do here?’ it becomes easier to eliminate the non-essential tasks.”

When Michelle Sentman discovered she was most happy operating heavy equipment, she knew she was on the right career path. She realized she wasn’t a “sit behind a desk kind of person,” and as a Project Manager at IWS, she is always on the move. Reflecting on her career in construction, she said, “It is a bit tougher for a woman in this industry. You have to be able to prove yourself and not second-guess yourself or your commitment. You need to be able to be tough and stand your ground at times.”

Sage Basher worked in the service industry before finding her calling in construction. “My family worked [at IWS] and liked it. I thought I would give it a try and now it feels like it was meant to be!” As a Project Coordinator, Sage points out that “Organization goes a long way, and even though it is fast-paced, it can be very rewarding to see a job through from start to finish.” She also encourages others to “make sure to take your vacations! It can get stressful or overwhelming at times, and it’s important to take time for yourself so you can be 100% when you work.”

Lora Holt entered construction in 1989, and has seen a lot of change over the years. Interestingly, when she moved into construction, it was a solution to a wage gap problem. “[I] had two offers, one was construction, and one was [Company X]. [Company X] offered me less money than the man I trained for this same position, so I went into construction.” As a successful trail-blazer, Lora’s advice to others is, “Plan ahead, the road is always changing. It is important to stay relevant and flexible within the industry.”

Sabrina Templeton landed in construction by recognizing, and acting on, an opportunity. “I didn't really know what I was doing with my life at 22. I randomly got an email from a cabinet shop in Monroe to be in their color lab and I jumped on the opportunity. That was the moment I fell in love with paint, stains and how much a little drop of dye can change the color of wood.” She is now the lead finish technician at IWS. And while she didn’t seek out woodworking as her chosen trade, her advice to those entering the workforce is to remain open and to act. “You might find your heart in something you never knew would or could exist. Go with your gut and create something beautiful.”
