DESCRIPTION OF APPRENTICESHIP – A Pathway to Success
WORK & WORKING CONDITIONS
Construction (Limited Residential Journeyman) electricians perform electrical installations on one and twofamily or multi-family dwelling units, not to exceed three floors above grade. They install wiring for power,
lighting, and specialized systems in dwellings. They also repair and maintain existing electrical systems in
existing residences. The work can be done both indoors and outdoors, in existing and newly constructed
buildings, in all kinds of weather around noise and mud. Electricians work in cramped areas and in awkward
positions.
Electrical apprenticeship is similar to an Associate Degree in that it is a two year program in length. Earn a
wage while you learn. The apprentice works side-by-side with an experienced journeyman. The vast majority
of training occurs on-the-job and is supplemented by classroom instruction. Classroom instruction is held in
the Fall, Winter and Spring term, online through IEC (Independent Electrical Contractors) at your own pace
within the parameters your instructor sets until all related classroom hours are completed.
