🌿 A Productive Front Yard 🌿 Five Years Later!

Five years ago, we transformed this small, sloped, sunny front yard in Sammamish into a garden that is both beautiful and productive. 🌱

The client wanted two things woven into the design: a productive edible garden and a pollinator-friendly ornamental garden, all within a space only about 9 × 20 feet.

The slope presented a challenge, so we used rectangular Corten planters, lightly terraced to create planting levels while keeping the design clean and elegant. The planters were custom powder-coated for a beautiful, polished finish. Look how beautifully they hold apple trees, figs, and blueberries! 🍎🫐

Along the fence, I planted Hydrangea macrophylla. At first, you might wonder—hydrangeas in this sunny, south-facing front yard? But this is where understanding the microclimate matters. 🌿

As the fruit trees and blueberries grew, they began filtering the strong afternoon sun, creating just the right amount of dappled light and protection for the hydrangeas along the fence.

It’s a lovely example of how edibles and ornamentals can live beautifully together, even in a small, sloped front yard.

And five years later, the best part?
The clients still love and enjoy their garden 100%! ♥️🌿

🌿 A Garden Shaped by Thoughtful Planting

This is a garden I had the opportunity to help design in the early years after graduating at .

Looking back at it now, I’m reminded of how much I’ve learned—and how much I still enjoy learning from every garden. 🌱

A beautiful garden isn’t just about choosing beautiful plants. It’s about choosing the right plants and giving each one a thoughtful place.

Simple things like clean lawn edges, well-maintained planting beds, proper spacing, and a gentle balance of thrillers, fillers & spillers can make such a difference. Each layer brings its own texture, colour and seasonal interest.

One of the things I learned in horticulture school—and continue to appreciate—is that the right plant in the right place can make a garden feel natural and effortless. ✨

As the seasons change, the garden quietly changes with them, too. And that, to me, is part of the beauty of gardening. 🌿
