Is Your Home Ready for Fire Season?
With forecasts showing another active wildfire season across Oregon, spring is the time to prepare — not July.
Here are smart, proactive steps you can take now:
- Clear dead grass, brush, and pine needles within 30 feet of your home
- Trim tree branches away from your roof and chimney
- Keep firewood piles at least 30 feet from structures
- Replace bark mulch near the home with gravel or rock
- Small changes dramatically slow fire spread.
Your roof is the most vulnerable part of your home during a wildfire.
Check Your Roof & Gutters
- Remove pine needles and debris from roof valleys
- Clean gutters thoroughly
- Inspect for lifted, cracked, or missing shingles
- Consider impact- and fire-resistant roofing materials if it’s time to replace
- Wind-blown embers are often what ignite homes — and they land on the roof first.
Harden the Home
- Install metal mesh screens over attic vents
- Seal gaps around eaves and siding
- Use non-combustible materials where possible
- Keep fences and decks clear of debris buildup
Fire season doesn’t wait — and preparation now can protect everything later.
