Carpenter Museum

This month 250 years ago a new Rehoboth regiment is formed under Colonel Thomas Carpenter III. Thomas was prominent in town affairs and elected as delegate in 1774 to represent Rehoboth in the Massachusetts Provincial Congress. He became Commander of the First Bristol Regiment from 1776-1780 and was on duty at White Plains, NY and for several months was stationed in Rhode Island. He was a "man of large size and mental capacity and highly esteemed." Three of Col. Thomas Carpenter's sons, Thomas, Stephen, and James, all served in the Revolutionary War.
Photographed is the house he built with his wife, Elizabeth Moulton in 1755. The house still stands and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

On this day 250 years ago a Rehoboth company of militiamen set off for New York City under orders of General Washington. If they were lucky they would find a soft pile of hay to lay their heads at night. Only officers would have a cot.

On display for a short time only, this Revolutionary War era folding officer’s bed can be seen at the Carpenter Museum!

A mattress filled with straw would have been added to the top of the stretched linen. The headboard dowels are made to pivot on a single nail so they do not break during transportation. The bed folds only once but is compact enough to travel by wagon. This bed was found in Marion, Massachusetts and is on loan from friend of the museum, Cathy Potter.
