We often get asked, "What are the biggest problems trees face?"
Here in Reno, one of the hottest and driest cities in the country, improper watering is a common issue. But one of the biggest problems we see is trees being planted too deep.
This incense cedar is a perfect example: you can clearly see the soil line showing how deeply the tree was buried, along with how much excess soil and mulch we had to remove from around the base. You can also see the signs of decline.
When planting a tree, never bury the root flare, the area at the base of the trunk where it naturally begins to widen into the root system. Also, be sure to remove all burlap, wire baskets, containers, or other planting materials before the tree goes into the ground. Leaving these in place can girdle the roots and restrict healthy growth.
When the root flare is buried, moisture becomes trapped against the trunk which can lead to decay, attract bark beetles and other insect pests, and increase the risk of disease and structural failure over time.
