Happy Earth Day! Shadow Lake Nature Preserve has some great ideas for simple ways you can help the earth right now!

1. Be car-free for the day if you can. Walking or biking to work or the store greatly reduces your carbon footprint—and it's healthy for you too!
2. If you must use your car, check your car's tire pressure to ensure better fuel efficiency.
3. Start trading in any plastic wear for sustainable and reusable alternatives. Start small with water bottles, mesh produce bags, and beeswax wraps.
4. Learn about the local history and current events of the Native lands you live and recreate on. The Snoqualmie Tribe Ancestral Lands Movement is a great place to start in our local area!
5. Make your yard more wildlife-friendly by planting native plants and removing any unwanted weeds.
6. Take a moment to pick up any trash you see when you're out and about.
7. Eat locally grown fruits and vegetables and use your scraps to make a delicious vegetable stock!
8. If you have kids, recycle toilet paper rolls to make bird feeders as a fun craft project!
9. Get outside and appreciate nature! Spend time visiting your local trails and parks.
10. Support an environmental organization—like SHADOW Lake Nature Preserve! (Or Environmental Science Center or Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust or Tilth Alliance or Sustainable Renton.)

When it comes to filling your feeders, there is a difference in the foods you offer – and the birds know it! Feeding a poor quality food can be a waste of money when the birds don't eat it or simply kick out filler seeds in many brands of bird food.

The experts at Wild Birds Unlimited can help you pick the right foods for the birds in your backyard. Our top-quality bird foods target the specific birds you want to attract and discourage the birds (and critters) you don’t. Offer the right foods and watch the birds come a-flying!

The Backyard Bird Count is happening this weekend! In just one hour this morning I saw 12 different birds outside the office windows. The highlight of the morning was a Townshend's Warbler.

What birds have you seen in your backyard, at the local park or any other place in the great outdoors recently?
