A major Wyndclyffe milestone!

The original tower roof was removed after significant deterioration of both the supporting masonry and timber framing. Standing 92 feet tall, the structure required careful planning, extensive masonry restoration, and a complete rebuild of the tower frame.

Last week, the new frame was craned into place atop the restored brick tower—bringing one of the building’s most recognizable features back to life..

After completing a few other projects at the property - guest house, garage, art studio, outdoor kitchen, pool - we were asked to turn our attention to the main residence. The owners had long been frustrated with the kitchen and lack of a mudroom so an overhaul of the first floor was in order. A mudroom, designed to match the age of the home, was created by enclosing some former porch area and this allowed some changes to be made to the kitchen and improved the flow between living and dining room rooms. For this project, we also had the pleasure of working with a few of our favorite people again, including and .

A few more images of our Germantown cottage. Since these photos were taken the views out the doors have shifted our attention from the adjacent landscape to long views of the snow-capped Catskill Mountains.

Consisting of four structures surrounded by meadows and beautifully designed mature gardens, the property had fantastic bones but needed updating. The main house had a first-floor layout that exiled the kitchen to a small space at the far eastern end of the house. This didn’t work for our clients who love to cook and entertain. We were tasked with holistically reworking the first floor to create a new kitchen, pantry, mudroom, bathroom, laundry room, and double parlors. This work included selective window replacement, restoration, or relocation, uncovering and refinishing existing historic flooring, relocating interior partition walls, new interior trim, paint, surfaces, and millwork along with all the behind-the scenes systems required to support these updates – new HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and insulation.

Unfortunately, when we began work, we also discovered severe structural damage that required careful and precise replacement of two-hundred-year-old framing members and stacked-stone foundation walls.

One of the great delights of this project was the opportunity our clients gave us to dive deep into the house’s interior design. We worked with them to select all the interior finishes and fixtures and designed the lighting and custom millwork. We also consulted on soft furnishings, art, and styling. Our design walks a careful line between respecting the historic character of the existing structure and celebrating the bold, eclectic, and colorful artwork and furnishings that bring our clients (and us!) so much delight. We emphasized historic proportions in our trim profiles, openings, and built-ins and injected fun with wild color and pattern mixing.

Although it is their primary residence, our clients have lovingly dubbed their home ‘Holiday House.’ We trust that they will soak up the celebratory ambiance for many years to come.

A few last swimming pool images before we completely surrender to autumn. We designed this new-construction dual-use pool house / guest house to look like the oldest structure on the property. Pre-weathered barn siding and a cedar shake roof allow the building to quietly occupy the site at the front approach and a set of doors create more modern indoor/outdoor living spaces at the rear. Space constraints related to existing infrastructure and zoning setbacks left only a very small area to locate the swimming pool so who worked with us on the landscape, offered the idea of a circular shape to maximize swimming area. As the grading took shape we were able to introduce a stone HaHa wall that serves as an additional safety barrier and punches well above its weight as a landscape feature and vantage point to take in the views of the Catskill Mountains in the distance.

Applying a finish coat - the final phase of our latest pool build with Scott Pools. The circular shape was chosen to allow the pool to fit within a very tight “building envelope,” however, the shape quickly became the source of some obsession, especially when complimented with an adjacent haha wall that snakes through the property. This one took a village and included the talented in the planning process. Finished photos coming very soon.

Prior to our clients acquisition, this small barn was mainly used for winter storage and as an AirBnB for mice and other small creatures. Its location just a few feet away from the swimming pool made it an ideal poolside lounge / changing area.

To reverse years of neglect and wood to ground contact, we lifted the building a few feet off the ground, cut away portions of rotted timber and poured a new footing/stem wall/slab to support the structure. Once stabilized we cleaned up the woodwork added some lights, new windows, seasonal shower and wet bar. Our antique-hound clients finished it off with lots of help from . The finished product feels pretty perfect for a holiday weekend, or any summer weekend for that matter.
