You should conserve water whenever possible. Large volumes over short periods will flush untreated wastes into your drain field. Space out heavy uses of water such as laundry and bathing.

A good rule of thumb, if it is not biodegradable it doesn't belong in the septic!
No cigarette butts, tissues, sanitary napkins, disposable diapers, coffee grounds, cotton swabs or wipes. Even if it says “flushable” it may not be!

STOP! DON’T DUMP THAT GREASE DOWN YOUR DRAIN!
Grease can harden in the tank's scum layer and then build up and block the inlet or outlet of the tank. If you melt grease and pour it down the drain it may run through the septic tank, hardening and clogging the soil pores.

JUST BECAUSE IT SAYS “FLUSHABLE” DOESN’T MEAN THAT IT IS!
Pro tip from A-1 Septic Service: “Flushable” wipes and feminine products are NOT safe to flush if you have a septic system! They can clog up the pipes and cost you a lot to clean them out! Do your septic system a favor and don’t flush anything except toilet paper.

Just because things say they are flushable, doesn’t mean that they are. Things like feminine hygiene products, wipes, cigarette butts, disposable diapers and paper towels can harm your septic system costing you a lot of time and money to clean it out! Don’t flush anything that’s not biodegradable!
