It’s the question I get more than any other, so I tested it, and the answer might surprise you!
On a 105° August day, I pointed my laser thermometer at a black roof and a white roof. Black: 198°F. White: 196°F…2°F difference is all!
During manufacturing, ceramic granules are sprinkled into the surface while the asphalt is still cooling. Those granules are what give the shingle its color, but more importantly, they’re what protect the shingle from UV rays. And they do that job regardless of color.
What actually heats your house? Attic ventilation and proper insulation. Ridge vents, soffit vents, and blown-in insulation…that’s where the heat battle is won or lost.
