I founded Heart and Soil as a boutique commercial landscape beautification business, but I soon realized my passion is helping others discover their green thumb.

Farfugium Gigantea - Giant Leopard Plant (tractor seat plant)
Probably my favorite shade plant. If you want to add some bold texture to your shaded areas you should look no further. Rich, dark green, waxy foliage, an evergreen in our area, with bright yellow blooms in late fall/early winter. Beautiful in groups under trees or in front of taller shrubs. Grows about 3 feet tall and wide, and performs best in partial to full shade (too much sun will burn leaves).

I LOVE adding ornamental peppers to my fall planters. They come in so many different varieties and with fun names like ‘Acapulco’, ‘Sangria’, ‘Chilli Chilli’, ‘Wicked’, ‘Midnight Fire’ (to name a few) how couldn’t you fall in love with them? They add bright color and a lot of pazzaz to any planter! Fun fact: while grown for their spectacular color they are also edible … but be careful most varieties are extremely hot (leaves are toxic!!)!

How to make sure to water your lawn correctly!
Lawns are tough and resilient but for a beautiful green lawn you need to keep a few things in mind.

- Do NOT water your lawn every day but instead 2-3 times a week. Make your watering sessions longer to make sure that water will soak about 6 inches deep. If you water daily you will not ‘teach’ your lawn to grow deep and healthy roots.

- Best time to water is in the morning before 10am. If you need to water later in the day then try to do so in late afternoon before sun sets and grass blades have plenty of time to dry completely. If you water too late your lawn will be more prone to disease and root rot.

- Not every side of your yard will need the same amount of water. Compared to lawn in direct sun you can cut watering time in half for mostly shady areas of your lawn.

- pay attention to the weather. Don’t set your sprinkler and forget about your lawn. Turn it off after a torrential downpour. Too much water simply isn’t good for your lawn and, by adding water you will contribute to soggy and swampy areas (especially here in WW).

Remember: lawns are resilient and can survive weeks without water. They will go dormant and turn brown BUT they don’t die right away.

Dorotheanthus “trailing mezoo”
A low maintenance, heat and drought tolerant, forgiving and very rewarding succulent that prefers full sun but also performs beautifully in shade. One of my absolute favorite plants for any window box, hanging basket or planter! These beautiful window boxes at the Olde Harbour Inn, Historic Inns of Savannah!
