As African Landing Commemoration Week approaches, we’re reflecting on a meaningful moment from earlier this year—the dedication of the African Landing Memorial Plaza at Fort Monroe.
Athens Building Corporation was honored to be a part of bringing this important space to life and to join the community for its dedication in April. Through powerful speeches, storytelling, dance, and fellowship, we came together to recognize the 1619 arrival of the first Africans in Colonial Virginia and honor the men, women, and children whose lives and legacies are forever connected to this historic place.
Now, we look forward to another important chapter in the memorial’s story: the unveiling of its newest sculpture, honoring Antony, Isabella, and their son, William.
We are proud to have played a role in creating a place that preserves this history, encourages reflection, and ensures these stories continue to be told for generations to come.
