Digging a hole to look at soil layers and root depth can tell quite a story and invite new questions. Why have these roots stopped growing at this depth? Why does the soil suddenly get darker and finer-textured here? What signs are there of microbial activity or mineral imbalance?

Recently completed design for a full backyard remodel for a family in Richmond. Featured are a chicken coop, living willow dome for kids to play in (and chickens to hide from aerial predators), tilapia pond, outdoor kitchen with greywater reuse, brick path and retaining wall with inset steps, a dining patio, shade pergola, grape arbor, veggie beds, lots of edible perennials and support plants, irrigated lawn, and a stone walkway. We’re excited to begin the installation!

I just completed CREATE Yellowstone, an amazing and immersive 9-month, very intensive, holistic soil/plant/animal health training program so that I can work with farmers and ranchers to help them improve their agroecologies. I feel very honored to have been selected to participate and to have had the enormous privilege to work with .nicole of and the rest of the coaching team, and to be part of this lifelong cohort of superheroes for whom I have such respect and admiration. Special thanks to Pete and Meagan of for hosting and for their time working with me for the last several months.

I just had a nice visit with another of Nicole Masters’ former students, of Living Roots Farm and was generously given a very inspirational tour of the facilities.

The 30ish-acre plot is replete with water-spreading earthworks, pioneer & fruit trees, biofert trial plots, biocomplete compost & vermicast operations, seed production, and a farmstay rental. It’s only on year two but feels like it’s been going for a quite while. Bravo!
