The one thing? Treating power strips and extension cords like permanent wiring.

They're built for temporary, light-duty use, a charger, a lamp. The trouble starts when "temporary" quietly becomes permanent: one strip running a whole home office, a cord powering a space heater all winter, one outlet daisy-chained into three more. That outlet is only rated for so much, and stacking high-draw devices makes everything downstream run hotter than it should. That heat is where warm outlets, tripped breakers, and burning smells come from.

The real fix usually isn't a bigger power strip. It's more properly wired outlets, or a dedicated circuit for what needs one.

Most people can name the obvious electrical warning signs: sparks, tripped breakers, a scorched outlet. Fewer know that one of the earliest signs is one you smell before you ever see it.

That faint fishy or burning odor? It’s often plastic. When wiring, outlets, or panel components run hotter than they should, the insulation and casings around them start to break down and give off that distinct smell long before there’s any visible damage. It’s your electrical system flagging a problem while it’s still small.

So if you catch a whiff you can’t trace to the kitchen, don’t wait it out. Stop using the area and have it looked at.

Smelling something off in your home? We’re happy to check it out.

It feels like the responsible move: storm rolling in, so you head to the panel and kill the main. But for most homes, that’s not necessary, and it can actually leave you fumbling around your electrical panel in the dark for no real benefit.

The one thing that changes the answer is water. If water is pooling near your panel, cutting the power reduces risk. But, and this is the part that matters most, if the panel itself is wet, or you’d have to stand in water to reach it, do not touch it. Water and electricity together is exactly the scenario that turns a manageable problem into a dangerous one. That’s a call for a pro, not a DIY moment.

That’s where we come in. Call (859) 623-3848 and we’ll handle it safely.

The lights are back on. Everything looks fine, so you move on.

But storm stress on your electrical system doesn't always show up the day the sky clears. A surge or moisture intrusion can leave damage that surfaces weeks later, as a breaker that won't stop tripping, an outlet that runs warm, or lights that flicker for no obvious reason.

Swipe through for the after-storm signs worth watching, and if you notice any of them, we're glad to take a look.

If you opened your August bill and had to do a double-take? You're not imagining it, for most Kentucky homes, this is the priciest month of the year. Here's why 👇

It comes down to one thing working overtime: your air conditioner.

In August, the gap between the heat outside and the temperature you want inside is at its widest. The bigger that gap, the harder your AC has to run to close it, and the longer it runs, the more power it pulls. Now add our thick Kentucky humidity (your AC is wringing moisture out of the air, not just cooling it) plus long stretches of hot days with few cool nights to give the system a break, and the meter just keeps spinning.

That cooling load is normal. But a few electrical-side factors can quietly push it higher: high-draw appliances crowded onto overloaded circuits, aging connections working harder than they should, or a panel that's straining to keep up.

If your bill has you wondering whether your system is running as safely and efficiently as it could be, we're glad to take a look.

When the lights go out, the instinct is to grab a flashlight and wait. But those first few minutes tell you a lot.

Look outside first. Neighbors dark too? It's a grid outage. Report it to your utility and settle in. Just your house? Head to the panel. A tripped breaker often sits halfway between ON and OFF, and it won't reset unless you push it all the way OFF before flipping it back ON.
Two things worth doing while you wait: unplug your electronics so a surge doesn't damage them when power returns, and keep the fridge and freezer shut. Food holds about 4 hours in a closed fridge and up to 48 hours in a full freezer.

Here's the part we'd underline: if a breaker won't reset, keeps tripping, or you catch a burning smell, stop flipping it. Shut off the main breaker (the large one at the top of your panel that cuts power to the entire house) and call a licensed electrician before doing anything else. That's not a DIY moment.

The setup looks innocent. Two monitors, a laptop dock, a printer, a space heater in the winter, a mini fridge you swore was temporary, all daisy-chained back to one outlet that was installed when a home office meant a phone and a filing cabinet.
Most of the time it works. Right up until it doesn't.

Swipe through for what actually happens when a circuit is carrying more than it was built for, the warning signs worth paying attention to, and when a dedicated circuit makes sense for your setup.

Working from home? We're happy to take a look.

That's it. That's the list.
No diagnosing the panel from a YouTube video, guessing which breaker it is or standing in the hallway with a flashlight in your teeth. You call, we show up, we figure it out.

One of the easiest summer wins for your home is already on your ceiling.
Ceiling fans aren't just for show. Used the right way, they can take real pressure off your AC and noticeably cut what you spend keeping the house cool.
Small change, real impact.
