I don’t know if these pictures will illustrate the issue well, but there were two things wrong with the setting of this tile and closet fl**ge (the thing your toilet sits on). There were two layers of 3/4” plywood put down, the first structural, the second is the substrate that the tile@was set on. Neither the tile nor the top layer of tile went under the closet fl**ge and there was a sizable gap where water could pe*****te if the wax ring seal leaks. The best I could do was caulk around the perimeter of the closet fl**ge. Not ideal, but the best thing I could do short of tearing the floor out. 🤷🏼‍♂️

I’m going to call this selection of pictures “What Lies Beneath.” I was called out to re-caulk the seams of the shower and around the glass enclosure. There were some cracks in the tiles of the threshold and a hollow sound when I tapped in certain areas. I couldn’t be sure of the extent of the damage but the customer was pleased we went ahead and rebuilt the threshold as well. The 2x4 structure was completely rotted away. The existing shower pan liner was not leaking and was integrated into the repair along with Wedi board with Kerdi Membrane by . Raincoats on a duck cause this fowl threshold sure got wet.

This project demonstrates a partial wall rebuild after a tub was removed and replaced. The studs needed adjusting so the Wedi backer board and tile would sit properly and we used a black band of tile to divide the two shades of slightly different white tile (old/new). All in all it came out well with great waterproofing.

The Parkstone Dwelling in Pittsburgh was designed by Frederick Scheibler Jr. It is supper cool@in SO MANY ways but there is a tile feature under the second story porches that looks like an ornate rug hanging out to dry making it a relevant and worthy post. I could go on and on about the house but there’s plenty online that I need not repeat. This is simply a shout out to whimsical tile design on a super dope quadex (if that is such a word).

I’ve seen these diagonal bars more and more in hotel bathrooms and they are addressing the need for a place to prop your leg up in showers. Perfect for the purpose of washing or shaving without losing your balance. Or pulling yourself up off the shower floor after a night of heavy drinking. Great functionality and solid design that can be installed years after construction in tile or cultures marble bathroom installations.

Sometimes redoing a bathroom floor allows for the opportunity to address other issues. In this case the plumbing was external, hidden behind a boxed off area that ran behind the toilet to the sink. The floor was taken down to the studs, the proper plumbing was run underneath the floor and voila. The fun choice of tile help spruce things up as well!
