Congratulations to Mitch Rowland, recipient of the 2020 Marcellus Wright Jr. Award!

The Marcellus Wright Jr. Award, considered the Chapter’s highest honor bestowed upon a Chapter member, and given to an individual nominated for their continuous service to the profession, was awarded to Mitch Rowland, AIA. Mitch is a dedicated member of AIA Richmond and is known in the community not only for his work but for his dedication to the craft and mentorship of countless architects.

Mitch has been recognized for his professional representation through leadership roles as the AIA Richmond President, Treasurer, and Board Member as well as the AIA Virginia Board Director, Treasurer, Finance Committee Member, Government Affairs Committee Member, By-Laws Task Force Member and Invest in the Future Task Force Member.

Stephen Weisensale, AIA and Lee Shadbolt, AIA, previous winners of the Marcellus Wright, Jr. Award, extend their congratulations to Mitch on a well-deserved honor.

Robert A. (Bob) Boynton, FAIA, a previous recipient of the Marcellus Wright Jr. Award and Mitch’s mentor for 8 years and partner for 29 years, celebrated the honor remotely noting that Mitch was a true Citizen Architect.

“His selfless service to the profession has elevated him above his fellow architects and he has now been so honored as the 29th recipient of the Marcellus Wright Jr. Award.”

Commercial Coffee was held this morning at the Observation Deck at City Hall! Beautiful 360-degree views of Richmond left everyone in attendance awestruck, despite the cold weather. Navy Hill, a new development revitalizing the entire neighborhood surrounding City Hall featuring affordable housing, restaurants, stores, and more, was the topic of the event. This massive undertaking promises to continue the trend of transformational change downtown, which ComArchs has been actively engaged in for 20 years. You can read more at the Navy Hill website: navyhillrva.com. See if you can spot our past projects around Capitol Square!

Yesterday, a Dedication Ceremony was held for the Women's Monument of Virginia! The lawn of Richmond's Capitol Square was packed with hundreds of spectators there to see the unveiling of seven of the intended twelve, life-size bronze sculptures. Commonwealth Architects provided architecture and landscape architecture services for the project. We are so proud to be a part of this historic monument. Key speakers included Governor Ralph Northam, Founder and Director of Studio EIS Ivan Schwartz, and Professor of Leadership Studies Dr. Lauranette Lee.

"Here is where I think this talk gets really interesting: I still make sculptures of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. I don't turn my back on these good gentlemen, but their gentlemen's club which has occupied our national living room - our nation's public spaces - has, at last, started to admit women, African Americans, and Native Americans. This doesn't change the past, but it does begin to open a room with a new view." - Ivan Schwartz

Ken, Ruth and Brendan took the opportunity to attend Richmond YAF’s Hardhat Tour of the upcoming Starr Hill Richmond Beer Hall & Rooftop brewery space in Scott’s Addition yesterday. They heard from the brewery manager about her plans for brewing unique beers at their new location, and the architect completing the project about meeting Starr Hill’s intent to create a unique space for experiencing their product and brand. Kudos to 510 architects for another great design in Scott’s Addition, and thanks to YAF for putting on another great event!
