Mark Spangler Architecture

Mark Spangler Architecture For over 30 years a major goal of Mark Spangler Architecture has been to provide clients with unique Every project has its own vibe, and no two are alike.

"Personal attention to every detail from design conception to completion" is how clients describe working with architect Mark Spangler. This might account for Mark consistently being recognized as one of the top residential architects in Virginia. Mark also holds a BFA in Interior Design, which allows him to combine the disciplines of architecture and interior design into a seamless solution. As

a sole proprietor, I am able to create a level of involvement with my clients that fosters a stronger, more finely tuned design. I am intimately aware of all the different dimensions, systems and data that are required to produce and document a clients home, addition, dream. A visually attractive conceptual drawing is only as successful as the construction drawings that document the design. There are numerous components that make up the whole and they must all be precise. Working for myself allows me to design on my creative terms to develop designs and concepts based on my personal knowledge of the client. Interacting directly with clients throughout the design process keeps me surgically focused on their preferences, their lifestyles, their budget and their vision. I personally create the construction drawings, which gives me the opportunity to make modifications throughout the entire design process, from conceptual sketches through the construction drawings." I make it a point to form strong relationships with all professionals who'll be involved with the project, from the owners to the builder, engineers, interior designer landscape architect and any others who bring a unique skill set to the project. When I’m deep into a design solution and it’s starting to come together in an exciting or really special way, I can’t wait to get to work to take up where I left off the night before. Which is actually not an accurate statement, because when I leave for the day I’m always thinking about that project on the boards. I don’t really stop working at the end of the day…..I’m always thinking about potential solutions to the design challenges that face me. That’s what’s really cool about the architectural profession. It’s what keeps me fresh and pushes me to look at similar projects in different ways. What are Mark's secrets to success ? "I don't push any one style on my clients, I work in many different languages of architecture.I always want to deliver more than I’m asked for. I strive to exceed my clients’ expectations and, just as importantly, have them look at potential concepts from multiple perspectives. This results in a win for me as an architect and more importantly, a win for my clients. My clients move into their new home, addition or renovation as delighted with the space as they were with the process that allowed us to arrive there." Respecting my clients' budget is of utmost importance, and no project is too small. I enjoy working on a modest addition as much as new home or family compound. This won’t be everyone’s cup of tea. A small, dilapidated, garage on the southern edge of the of the Fan, and VCU campus.

The site is a zero lot line space. Meaning the exterior walls abut the front rear and side property lines, and a very rigid set of maximum height limitations. Expensive Side elevation windows had to be fire rated because of the proximity to neighboring structures.

The structure has been converted to a 2 bedroom apt with roof deck and first floor garage space.

A more industrial pallete of finish materials were originally specified, but budget forced a more simple, economic set of finishes.

Revisiting an older commission in Clarksville, Va. for a new addition. The original commission was a new farmhouse. The clients then requested a kitchen addition. Now we're investigating a second great room for the owners growing, extended family. The detached barn structure was a second commission for a free standing guest cottage. The owners wanted the entire complex to appear as it had been built long long ago, and grew as the needs of the owners changed, and expanded..
