One of the largest soft scale insects in North America, Magnolia Scale can grow up to ½ inch in diameter! These sap-sucking pests attach to magnolia twigs and branches, potentially causing branch dieback, yellowing leaves, and sticky honeydew that encourages black sooty mold. Ultimately, scale infestations of any kind can be detrimental to trees and a great time to treat for them is right now 🎉 If you spot these little hitchhikers, it’s time to take a closer look, your magnolia may need some attention! Did you know that some fungi in the garden can be detrimental, while other fungi can be harmless or a sign of a healthy landscape? Pictured here are two different kinds of fungi. The first is epifagus. Beechdrops are unique parasitic plants that lack chlorophyll, meaning they cannot produce their own energy through photosynthesis. They depend entirely on their relationship with mature, healthy American Beech trees (Fagus grandifolia), attaching their roots to the tree’s root system to obtain the resources they need to survive.
Although beechdrops are considered parasites, they do not negatively impact the health of their host tree. Instead, they are a natural and important part of a healthy woodland ecosystem. Their presence can be a sign of well-functioning soil, a thriving forest environment, and the interconnected relationships that support a diverse web of life. While epifagus is a good sign for your garden, the second image is more perplexing. A fruiting body growing within a wound on a trunk, could potentially be a negative visual signal for the tree. Spotted Lantern Fly (SLF) is here in Richmond, Virginia and it is an invasive species that can cause a tremendous amount of damage to landscapes. Bartlett can help! Our Richmond office has a new face! Help us welcome our newest Arborist Representative, Alex Burton. We asked him a few questions about his background and experience with Bartlett. Check out his answers below!
“I originally studied film at UNC Asheville, but I found myself wanting a career that allowed me to work outdoors and make a more tangible impact every day. That led me to pursue a degree in Urban Forestry and Arboriculture. Arboriculture gives me the opportunity to help people while improving the health, safety, and beauty of the landscapes they value most.
I joined Bartlett in 2021 as an intern in the Charlottesville office. During my time there, I also served as our Local Office Safety Coordinator and the Plant Healthcare lead. Those roles allowed me to work closely with clients, crews, and fellow arborists while gaining experience in tree care, diagnostics, safety, and customer service. I’m excited to bring that experience into my new role as an Arborist Representative. What I love most about Bartlett is the people and the culture of continuous learning. Bartlett combines science-based tree care with a genuine commitment to people, and that’s something I’m proud to be a part of.
Favorite tree?
My favorite tree is the Bristlecone Pine. Some of these trees are thousands of years old, one of which is right around the same age as the Great Pyramids of Giza. They’re a reminder that strength isn’t always about growing fast; sometimes it’s about enduring and adapting over time.” 🌳

We all couldn’t be more grateful and happy to share that today we are celebrating 119 years of Bartlett Tree Experts! 🎉 We are so much more than people who work on trees. We are a community of arborists who work as a team to dedicate their lives to championing scientific tree care with the purpose of supporting our local communities and their environments.
While customer service, safety and professionalism will always be our priority, many who love us do not know about our extensive roots in the science behind what we do. Bartlett Tree Research Laboratories creates the foundation for how our teams operate all over the world and they are also celebrating their 100th year anniversary. 🎊 We are very appreciative to be able to provide our clients and landscapes the generations of research and tree work that built Bartlett and we can’t wait to continue this important journey. 🌳
This video is of the State Champion Magnolia acuminata, planted in early 1700s and it is the second largest of its kind in the world. Our Richmond Bartlett office loves taking care of it!

As soon as the temperatures rise in Virginia, we find ourselves noticing all kinds of garden pests and diseases emerge. Pictured here is powdery mildew which is a foliar fungus.
